MC/Speaker Bio
Michael Thai- Senior Software Engineer
Michael is the co-founder of ACC & a software engineer developing backend architecture, systems, & languages for an AI customer service platform. He hasa deep curiosity in combining machine learning with augmented reality to develop socially impactful products.
His goals for ACC are to broadcast the diversity of thoughts & talents of the Asian community & reshape the manufactured perception of the Asian model minority. In addition, he'smotivated by personal experience to facilitate mentorship opportunities for the next generation of Asians.
In 2012, he met the first individual who inspired him: his ex-manager of Chinese ethnicity with a background in computer science & operations researchwho directed himaway from his unimaginative career trajectory in accountingandtowards hispassion for consulting & eventually, software engineering. From that invaluable guidance, he learnedIt's essential that these relationships are fostered early because it not only leads to the success of the Asian community, but to progress for the world in the form of new & diverse ideas, cultures, & innovations.

Mike Phan - Product ManagerA former academic, Mike left his Linguistics PhD program when he finally got tired of people asking him how many languages he speaks. Now he works as a Product Manager focusing on Natural Language Processing, bringing together his theoretical linguistics background & contemporary Machine Learning approaches to natural language. He thinks we still have some time before SkyNet turns on the Terminators, but not enough time that we shouldn't start ethically building AI to incorporate & address social & environmental justice concerns.
In the rare commodity that New Yorkers call "free time", Mike can be found riding & living on one of his too many bicycles (he won't stop talking about a recent bike tour with a friend around Taiwan). He has been training in Filipino & Indo-Malay martial arts (kali & silat) for close to a decade, as well as Brazilian JiuJitsu more recently, & hopes John Wick will need a sidekick one day.
