Speaker 1: Scott Chasalow
Title: Data Visualization in Translational Bioinformatics

Abstract:
We will take a brief tour through three types of data visualizations used in Translational Bioinformatics & the Pharmaceutical industry more generally: visualizations (1) more common than they deserve to be; (2) less common than they deserve to be; & (3) as common as they deserve to be.

Bio:
Scott D. Chasalow, PhD - Research Fellow, Bioinformatics Methodology, Bristol-Myers Squibb

Scott leads a team of five data scientists focused on bioinformatics methodology: how to explore, model, & visualize biomedical data, with an emphasis on genomics applied to drug discovery & development.

Scott graduated from Cornell University in 1984 with a B.A. in Biological Sciences, & in 1988 obtained an M.A. in Biochemistry from UC Berkeley. He then switched gears a bit, earning a PhD in Biostatistics from UC Berkeley in 1992. After 10 years in government, academia, & industry, focused on agricultural genomics research, Scott joined BMS, where since 2003 he has worked at the interface of statistics & high-throughput biology, focused on statistical aspects of biomarkers in human biomedical studies. He has particular interests in statistical bioinformatics & genetics, precision medicine for immuno-oncology, statistical computing, experimental design, & data visualization, & co-leads the development & deployment of a framework for reproducible research.

Speaker 2: Isaac M. Neuhaus
Title: canvasXpress: An R Library for Interactive Data Visualization & Reproducible Research.

Abstract:
CanvasXpress is a standalone JavaScript library used for visualization of genomics & non-genomics data sets. It has a user-friendly & unobtrusive interface to allow users to explore data sets & customize their visualizations. It also has a sophisticated mechanism to track all user interactions & modifications, which makes it ideal for use in Reproducible Research. More information can be found at https://canvasxpress.org

Bio:
Isaac M. Neuhaus, PhD - Director of Computational Genomics, Bristol-Myers Squibb

Isaac leads a team of 13 computational scientists in the Translational Medicine division. Their work includes bioinformatics software development & data analysis & visualization for drug discovery through full development programs, focusing on technologies such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Proteomics, Flow Cytometry, & Cloud Computing.

Isaac graduated from Universidad Javeriana in Colombia in 1984 with a B.S in Microbiology, & in 1995 obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from the University of Miami. A post-doc at the Brigham & Womens hospital afforded him the opportunity to work in mouse genetics with Dave Beier & develop his passion for Bioinformatics, learning from Lincoln Stein. From 2000 to the present, he has held positions of increasing responsibility at BMS, where he developed the infrastructure to store genomic data. More recently, he has led the transition of NGS data processing to be completely cloud based, co-leads the development of a framework for reproducible research, & leads the development of a framework for reproducible research & leads the development of visualization tools for genomics data. He is the developer of the JavaScript library, CanvasXpress.

Please note there will not be refreshments at this meetup since it will be spring break at the New School & they will have limited staff.

--------

O'Reilly & Plotly are hosting the Jupyter Pop-up, a day-long exploration of Jupyter's best practices, time-saving tips & shortcuts, & practical use cases in business & industry. It will be in Boston on March 21st. See https://conferences.oreilly.com/jupyter/popup-ma. They have offered us two tickets to raffle off. Since our next meetup is too late for the raffle, send me a message by March 13 if you'd like to go. I will put all names in a hat & pick out two winners on March 14th.
