Kick off the 2018 season with us at ThoughtWorks on Wednesday, January 24th for a new installment of Hackaday MakeIt NYC! Joining us among tonight's speakers is the brilliant Jonah Brucker-Cohen:

Jonah Brucker-Cohen, Ph.D., is an award winning researcher, artist, & writer. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism & Media Studies at Lehman College / CUNY in the Bronx. He received his Ph.D. in the Disruptive Design Team of the Electronic & Electrical Engineering Department of Trinity College Dublin. His work focuses on the theme of Deconstructing Networks & includes over 100 creative projects that critically challenge & subvert accepted perceptions of network interaction & experience. His artwork has been exhibited & showcased at venues such as SFMOMA, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Art, MOMA, ICA London, Whitney Museum of American Art, Palais du Tokyo, Tate Modern, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, & more. His project, Bumplist, is included in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. His writing has appeared in publications such as WIRED, Make, Gizmodo, Neural & more. His hardware hacking Scrapyard Challenge workshops have been held in over 15 countries in Europe, South America, North America, Asia, & Australia since 2003.

Jonah will discuss his projects & work in the theme of Critical Networked Experience that challenge & subvert accepted notions of network interaction & socialization. Some projects he will discuss include BumpList, an email community for the determined, Killer Route a GPS navigation system that integrates live crime data, WSSID a hacked wireless router that broadcasts the weather, ContactRot an iPhone app that challenges our reliance on the cloud, Alerting Infrastructure!, a website hit counter that destroys a building, Wifi-Hog a portable system for regaining control of public wireless networks & he will also discuss his "Scrapyard Challenge" hardware hacking workshops that he has been running since 2003. He will conclude his talk with a live demo & explanation of Lively & Healing Destinations", two web & mobile based projects that allow for collaborative interaction from cellphones on a shared public screen.
