As gene editing techniques become more refined, the possibility of editing the human genome is moving from science fiction to reality - in November 2018, the first live births of CRISPR/Cas9 genome edited babies was reported by researcher Dr. He Jiankui of the Southern University of Science & Technology in Shenzhen, China.
This event has prompted an ongoing worldwide discussion about the uses of this new technology. We want to know what you think.Join Genspace for an open community forum where we will learn about gene editing, engage in guided conversation, & make a plan of action.
We will try to answer the question:What should we do with this power?Many in the scientific community are calling for strict regulations on the use of CRISPR, while others are excited about the possibilities. Should we create babies who will never know disease or should we stick to smaller changes, like lowering the rates of breast cancer by eliminating mutations? Should we call for society to ban human gene editing? Who should decide? How can we maximize benefits from these scientific advances while minimizing the harm that might come from them?
This is anadapted version of the Editing Our Evolution: Rewriting the Human Genome community forum (developed by the NISE Network for the Building with Biology Program).
