EVENT DETAILS |
Advancements & innovations in design continue to transform everyday life. Unlike almost any other discipline, design has the power to permeate every product, moment, & solution in our lives.
However, there is one area in which design as a profession is lagging: diversity. The truth is, approximately 86% of professional designers are Caucasian. Yet race is only part of the picture. Diversity in design means diversity of experience, perspective, & creativity-otherwise known as diversity of thought-and these can be shaped by multiple factors including race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual identity, ability/disability & location, among others.
Join GA as we tackle the future of diversity in design head-on.
About the Panelist
Shalyn Oswald Photo
Shalyn Oswald Lead UXDI Instructor
Pronouns: She/Her/They/Them/He/Him
A former student of one of the early UXDI courses, Shalyn has worked as a user experience designer for IBM & brought human-centered design & design thinking to co-workers & clients alike, building empathy from the inside out.
While working on internal systems for clients such as American Express, T-Mobile, Vivint, GSK, & Coca-Cola, Shalyn found her calling in creating accessible & intuitive systems for all the folks whose livelihoods depended on these systems working FOR them, not against them: the everyday employee. Part of that was creating not only something very learnable but also something that helps people feel included no matter their age, background, or gender.
Shalyn is super passionate about educating folks on the future of technology, & tends to focus on psychology in UX & the unconscious biases that drive our data, our systems, & our lives.
