This symposium will explore the bioethical & legal ethical issues that arise for professionals working with individuals with dementia who engage in behavior potentially detrimental to the health & security of themselves & others. The symposium will focus on the period before dementia's final stages, addressing the challenges that professionals face when seeking to respect autonomy & self-expression while attending to the safety & well-being of people with dementia. The symposium will focus in particular on decisions concerning finances, driving, & sex. This program is geared towards legal professionals but will also be useful for medical & mental health professionals who wish to engage in an interdisciplinary conversation with lawyers. Students & interested members of the public are also welcome.
This program has been approved for 2.0 transitional/non-transitional New York State CLE credits in Ethics andProfessionalism.
This event is the annual Gloria & Stanley Plesent Lecture & is co-sponsored by the Jacob Burns Center for Ethics in the Practice of Law, the Einstein Cardozo Master of Science in Bioethics Program, the Gertrud Mainzer Program in Family Law, Policy, & Bioethics, & the Cardozo Bet Tzedek Legal Services Clinic.
