Introduction to Financial Modeling and Valuation III - Valuation Methods for Early Stage Startups

Workshop materials include Powerpoint and Excel examples for each valuation method as well as cap table calculations. A video recording will be available for 72 hours to view after the class date.

No prior finance experience is necessary.

The class may be attended virtually.

A fully functional financial model template which you can customize based on your company's needs may be purchased for an additional $40.

Welcome: 5:45 pm - 6:00 pm

Valuation Methods for Pre-Revenue Startups: 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Break: 7:00 - 7:15 pm

How to prepare a cap table: 7:15 pm - 8:00 pm

Specifically we will address eight different ways to value pre-revenue companies.

1. Venture Capital Method - most popular
2. Discounted Cash Flow or NPV method
3. The Chicago Method
4. The Dave Berkus Valuation Model
5. Bill Payne's Model
6. The Risk Factor Summation Model
7. Replacement Method or "All-In" Method
8. The Rule of Thirds

We will discuss one example for each.

We will also cover how to estimate the company's terminal value, WACC (weighted average cost of capital), and Free Cash Flow.

Finally we will discuss how to prepare a capitalization table and how it will change with each financing round.

Founder of the Startup Station Meetup

Victoria Yampolsky, CFA, is the President of the Startup Station,a finance & strategy consultancy for early stage startups that focuses on formulating monetization strategies, financial modeling & valuation. She's also Founder of the Startup Station - Finance School for Entrepreneurs where she teaches finance to early stage startup founders.

She is an advisor to Jotteq, Opkix, and Stringflix, as well as founder of several ventures in media & entertainment. Previously, Victoria worked in Deutsche Bank Research and did IT consulting for CapGemini's Financial Services Division. Victoria holds a Bachelor's Degree, Cum Laude, in Computer Science, with minor in Mathematics, from Cornell University and an MBA, with honors, from Columbia Business School. Victoria is also on the Advisory Board of the CIS Department of Cornell University.
