EVENT DETAILS
As we move into a new era of virtual events, we are combining your favorite aspect of talks night & project night in one! And to help you get the social fix, we'll be using remo.co, the virtual platform you raved about at PyBay conference.

FAQ:
How does one network / socialize at a virtual event?
With remo.co, each table can have a conversation theme. Double click to join the table (chat with a speaker, water cooler, let's talk about graph database, etc), turn on your mic and video, and wola, you'll meet folks with the same interests. You can also search the list of participants and invite them to your table for a reunion.
I miss Project Night, how will that work?
During opening remarks, you'll make announcements. Want to lead a discussion? Get code reviewed? Perhaps you are working on a data migration project and got stuck? Let us know, we'll name a table for you so people can find you during the meet up to chat further.

AGENDA:
6:30p Get up to speed on remo.co, network and reconnect with friends!
7:00p Opening remarks, sponsors acknowledgement, SIG and 'project night' announcements
7:10p Listen to scheduled talks OR head to 'project night' room to chat with others on topics of your interest, find mentors, etc.
8:30p Wrap up last talk, more Q&A and networking
9:00p Hard stop

Main talk (40 mins + Q&A )

Anvil, the Web, and the Perils of Abstraction

Abstractions are how we make computing possible. We edit files rather than poking individual bytes onto our hard drives; we make HTTP requests instead of crafting IP packets by hand; and we write Python instead of machine code.

But abstractions are a double-edged sword: They leak, and they fail. When your abstraction fails, do your users go down with the ship? Can they eject? Or can you do something better?

Meredydd will turn this analysis on the Web, where leaky and failed abstractions abound. He will discuss how these principles informed the design of Anvil, pure-Python web app framework that aims to create a properly Pythonic abstraction over the entire Web platform.

Bio

Meredydd has a PhD in building usable programming systems, and has strong opinions about how to make development easier and more accessible. He cofounded Anvil (https://anvil.works) to make web programming less of a headache and, frankly, more Pythonic. He's based in the UK, dances and flies airplanes for fun, and this summer he is missing the Bay Area terribly.

This event is produced by:

SF Python, a volunteers-run organization aiming to foster the Python Community in the Bay Area.
