Predicting Education & Inequality in NY with Gonzalo Betegon, Implementation Manager at Dataiku
The notion of "hard work equals success" is deeply rooted in American culture, but may not complete the whole picture. In this study, we use publicly available data from NY State DOE & the US census to analyze standardized test scores from 3rd to 8th grade students in NY State, & see how they relate to variables such as income & race through AI & ML predictive modeling. The aim is to predict test scores based on contextual variables predetermined to the students by their environment

Force of Ideas: Growing The Data Science Team at The Atlantic with Paul Schaffer, Lead Data Scientist at The Atlantic
In this talk, Paul will give an overview of how The Atlantic is increasingly incorporating data-driven decision-making, with a focus on the costs & benefits of starting from nearly-scratch. Specific topics will include:
- "Reader hardcoreness"- via neural nets, predicting the likelihood that readers will return to the site
- Picking the best time to publish an article (via linear regression)
- Reporting systems: How frequent should reports be? How obnoxious should they be?
- & other stuff!

Bios:

Gonzalo Betegon is an Implementation Manager at Dataiku. He helps drive smooth client implementation & adoption of Dataikus DSS software while tackling some interesting data science use cases. Prior to joining Dataiku, Gonzalo worked in project management & operational consulting at BNY Mellon & PwC, focusing on the financial services industry & process automation.

Paul Schaffer manages the data science team at The Atlantic. Prior to joining The Atlantic, Paul did data science work for healthcare.gov, on the federal health insurance exchange established under the ACA, & prior to that, he was on the national data team for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign in 2016. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Yale University.
