Maptime is a collective experience to learn, appreciate, & make maps! Journalist Nicole Martinelli will show how Resiliency Maps use OpenStreetMap to create make maps to store offline information about assets, resources & hazards in a given geographical area. Nicole will use her experience with NERT--Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams--teams in San Francisco, to lead maptimers in a mapathon designed to create a public record able to respond to natural disasters. The hope to train effective & self-sufficient NERT teams by using open source resources to provide potential response teams able to respond effectively in the first days after a disaster has produced about 9,000 NERTs in San Francisco; we'll learn about their training & the challenges to reach more vulnerable & resource-poor areas of the Bay Area, as well as produce a basic map of resources to best serve neighborhoods & create a resource for disaster preparedness for the public good.
