Talk 1: Elixir Registry by Michael Kompanets
This talk will briefly introduce GenServer, describe how to build a simple process registration & management tool from scratch & then how to use Elixir Registry. If there will be time we will go over how Registry could be used for other things like PubSub
About the Speaker:
Michael Kompanets - Michael has been working in web development for most of his career. He discovered elixir a few years ago & as soon as he grasped some basic OTP concepts he thought it would be valuable to tell people about it through screencasts.
--------------------
Talk 2: Date & Time in Elixir by Lau Taarnskov
A quick primer on civil time & time zones & how it relates to the sun. We will go through the date & time types in the Elixir standard library & how to chose the right one. How representing data well can improve code. Elixir 1.8 has a new behaviour that makes it possible to do time zone calculations directly via the Elixir standard library with fewer dependencies. Elixir 1.9 & 1.10 have some more changes regarding date & time we will also look at.
About the Speaker:
Lau Taarnskov - Lau has been involved with web development & e-commerce for decades. He started contributing to Elixir open source in 2014 & created the Calendar & Tzdata libraries. When it comes to the subject of date, time & time zones, besides talking about it & writing software for it he also writes about it on his blog at http://www.creativedeletion.com/
