The opportunity

Magic Leap is seeking a Sr. Materials Scientist with a focus on plastics & adhesives to support product development, applied research, & manufacturing.

Our Materials Scientists work on the development & selection of new adhesives as well as evaluating their behavior & properties using a range of scientific instruments. The results of these tests are used to develop new materials, research the performance of a new material, improve the performance of existing products, eliminate failures with materials already in use, & help with the development of new technologies. We are looking for candidates who are motivated, creative, & dedicated team players who excel in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must have a strong technical background & rigorous approach to problem solving, documentation, & be able to communicate & collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

What youll do

  • Material selection & implementation for product & manufacturing process development

  • Conduct research into the structures & properties of polymeric materials, especially thermoset resins & adhesives in order to obtain information that will be used to develop new products or enhance current products. Identify optimal cure & processing conditions & aid implementation in high volume manufacturing)

  • Operating & analysis of results  with a broad range of thermo-mechanical test methods for polymer characterization for product-relevant material properties, especially DSC, TGA, TMA, shear & tensile measurements, Rheometry, microscopy, profilometry,

  • Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various environments (processing, humidity, mechanical stress, etc.) on materials

  • Analyze product failures to identify root causes & design implications, with focus on polymers, composite & adhesives failures

  • Analyze & resolve, or assist technicians in solving work problems

  • Assist in diagnosing issues for test instrumentation to provide accurate test data for engineers

  • Collaborate with engineers & scientists from other disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical or optical engineering

The experience you bring

  • Masters degree in a Material science, chemical engineering or related field +5 years of related work experience or PhD degree with +2 years of related work experience

  • Deep knowledge of adhesives & plastics & their structure property relationship

  • Expertise in material characterization methodologies such as DMA, TMA, Instron, Rheometer, TGA, FTIR, RAMAN,  Instron, PSA testing & DSC

  • Experience with ASTM & other standard testings for mechanical performance & chemical characterization of plastics & adhesives

  • Analyze & communicate materials data in a clear, organized manner & make recommendations that allow for informed decision making

  • Good foundation in descriptive & inferential statistics with knowledge & experience in experimental design

  • Problem solving & troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Capable of working on multiple tasks & projects

  • Highly detail oriented & self-motivated

  • Applicants must have good basic laboratory skills related to consistent experiment methodology & safety

Its exciting if you also have

  • Ability to code in MATLAB

  • Statistical analysis (Six sigma certificate)

  • Familiarity with failure analysis of electronic components. (PCB, BGA chips. Solder & reflow process, different types of electronic packages & their characteristics)
