About the Role

At Freenome, you will participate in the development of an analytical framework to improve blood sample quality for biomarker discovery studies & contribute to our mission of early detection & intervention in human disease. As a (Senior) Research Associate in Development, you will contribute to protein assay development & execution of experiments, manually or on robotic platforms. You will work closely with scientists & computational biologists to rapidly iterate on improvements to the protein assay that can enhance our end-to-end test performance. You will also work with process engineers & technology transfer scientists to implement efficient automated workflows & improve experimental & clinical throughput in a regulated high-throughput environment.

How youll contribute:

  • Contribute to the development, quality control & optimization of protein assays, while diligently applying Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Identify & implement process improvements across the lab by thinking critically about the execution of all experiments.
  • Gather high-quality data, take detailed notes, & openly communicate on lessons learned while performing experiments.
  • Participate in experimental design, data analysis, & troubleshooting efforts
  • Identify & implement process improvements across the lab by thinking critically about the execution of all experiments.
  • Collaborate with engineers & clinical laboratory members to transition development protocols into clinical production, including automation, validation experiments, Quality Control, & SOP development.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related field.
  • 2+ years (Research Associate) or 4+ years (Senior Research Associate) of full-time laboratory experience, preferably in a regulated laboratory environment (CLIA, GLP, GCP, IVD)
  • Prior experience measuring proteins with antibody-based methods (e.g. ELISAs), particularly on multiplex analytical platforms (e.g. Luminex, MSD).
  • Prior experience with Protein assay development, including quality control
  • Proven track record of running successful experiments, preparing data for review, & giving effective scientific presentations.
  • Ability to perform basic data analysis & to be critical of results obtained during experimentation.
  • Clear communications skills & ability to work with team members in the same & adjacent disciplines.

About Freenome

Freenome is on a mission to empower everyone with the tools they need to detect, treat, & ultimately prevent diseases.

By applying machine learning techniques to high-quality multi-omics datasets covering various disease types, Freenome is developing blood tests to detect early-stage cancer & make treatments more effective. The company has raised $78 million from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures, Polaris Partners, & Founders Fund.

Our Science

Freenome is building technology to gain an understanding of the body through several analytes derived from blood. These signals include cell-free DNA, methylation of cell-free DNA, cell-free RNA, circulating proteins, & immune profiling derived from thousands of prospective samples. By developing novel statistical learning methods & applying them to integrate various -omics datasets, Freenome is a leader in modeling specific biological mechanisms to capture disease dependent signatures such as gene expression, immune response, tumor burden, the tissue of origin, & 3D chromatin structure.

By building comprehensive discovery datasets & modeling critical biological systems, Freenome is learning what biological changes are present within the blood between a variety of different disease states including cancer, autoimmune disorders, infections, drug response, & aging. With the combination of Freenomes datasets, cross-functional technical expertise, & mission to uncover the biological truth, we seek to positively change the lives of millions through the early detection & early treatment of disease.

Our Culture

Freenomers are technical & creative, visionary & grounded, empathetic & passionate. We build teams around divergent expertise, which allows us to solve problems & uncover opportunities in unique ways. Freenomers are some of the most talented experts in their fields, coming together to advance healthcare one breakthrough at a time.

We value empathy, integrity, & trust in one another. That means embracing others perspectives, those of our coworkers & those of the patients & communities we serve. It means knowing when to push, & when to listen. At Freenome, we give each other the benefit of the doubt in the belief that were all working as a team toward the same goals, & empower others to grow in a collaborative environment.

What does a successful person look like at Freenome?

Those who thrive at Freenome prioritize, manage, & execute their own goals in alignment with those of the company. They embrace our values of empathy, integrity, & trust, & hold themselves & their team accountable. They crave collaboration with brilliant minds from unfamiliar fields of study & believe that hiring & mentorship are fundamental to our success. Above all, they welcome & provide constructive feedback & criticism, trusting in the good intentions of others, & secure in the knowledge that embracing mistakes is the best way to learn & move on. For those who crave challenges, understudied problems, & the chance to see their work impact the lives of millions of people affected by cancer every year, theres no better place to be.
