The Atlantic is looking for a sharp, versatile editor to lead our family section. In this role, be responsible for assigning & editing both news-driven stories & longer-term narratives. Youll manage a team of staff writers & a roster of contributing writers. The ideal candidate will be guided by a strong sense of journalistic mission & a deep curiosity about why humans are the way that we are. You must have smart, original ideas about how to cover the issues that animate interpersonal relationshipswithin the contexts of families, parenting, child development, friendships, romantic relationships, & beyondwith an interest in how humans relate to one another, & how that changes, throughout all phases of life. You should have experience editing both essays & complicated reported pieces.
Were looking for an editor who is comfortable working with established writers as well as emerging talent. You should have impeccable news & editorial judgment, a knack for identifying the bigger pattern behind the days news, & an interest in the economic, political, & cultural forces shaping American family life. And you should be able to take a piece swiftly from an idea to a reality, handling every stage of the process, from big conceptual edits to sentence flow & word choice. The ideal candidate has at least 5-7 years of experience in editing & / or writing.
