POSITION TITLE: Technical Instructor Software Engineer
LOCATION: Bronx (potential to support Brooklyn) 
REPORTS TO: Director, Program & Technical Instruction


Per Scholas is seeking a multi-talented Instructor & Technology professional to deliver high-quality instruction to a diverse student population who are seeking to acquire skills & credentials that will prepare them for entry- to mid-level career opportunities in technology.
The Instructor must be a talented & passionate software engineer. Our instructors must be self-directed, self-motivated, & comfortable making intermediate-level decisions to adapt processes & curriculum delivery based on industry demand & class needs. We are looking for someone who is both business savvy & has technical knowledge & experience to meet the talent gaps among employers in the industry. The right candidate is able to apply industry experience to a classroom setting while identifying the skill levels of students & aligning instruction to fit students needs using course materials & hands-on instruction. The Instructor collaborates with peers on working with students & works with the Managing Director to change policies & procedures, identify & develop new & relevant training, & assist with strategic planning.


  • Deliver training preparing students for entry-level to mid-level careers in Information Technology, which includes daily instruction, assessment administration, attendance, one-on-one tutoring, evaluation & monitoring of individual student progress daily, addressing student violations with students in a consistent manner, & more
  • Work in collaboration with the Senior Director, Program Development & Design to identify & continually evaluate & evolve the training as demand new technologies become available. 
  • Work closely with the team to identify student needs, provide necessary support, establish individualized plans for student achievement, & participate in regular student status meetings.
  • Maintain & update Salesforce with student grades, certification, scores, & progress notes.
  • Provide students with insight into career tracks within the field & advise on career opportunities & types of positions that would be commensurate with their skills & credentials.
  • Work with the team to recommend students for particular employment opportunities.
  • Create, submit & maintain training curricula for approval & files.
  • Work closely with staff in other sites to ensure the integrity of implementing the curriculum
  • Order books, materials, vouchers for exams in advance of the training.


Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent practical experience) plus a minimum of 5 years IT work experience
  • At least 1 year of teaching experience preferred; experience with curriculum, syllabus development & lesson planning a plus
  • Strong team orientation desire to be part of a national learning team & to lead the team in the areas of technology
  • Strong interpersonal skills experience working with diverse individuals & groups with varying learning styles; experience in workforce development a plus
  • Experience with methods & strategies to explain & clarify complex topics to students with varying experiences & educational backgrounds
  • Experience with student assessment; & a talent to continuously evaluate the curriculum to identify what is working & what improvements can be made

Technical Qualifications

  • You have 3 or more years of experience working on a software development team and/or teaching software development
  • Familiarity with Computer Science topics, such as Recursion, Sorting, Search, Linked Lists, Stacks & queues, Sets, Trees, Search Tries, Graphs, Hash tables, & Design patterns
  • You have working experience in both front-end & back-end development & are fluent in HTML/5 & CSS/3
  • Full-stack JavaScript (strong JavaScript highly preferred)
  • SQL databases (we generally use PostgreSQL)
  • NoSQL (we generally cover MongoDB)
  • At least one additional object-oriented language (Java or Python preferred)
  • Experience with curriculum, syllabus development, & lesson planning.
  • Experience with student assessment; & a talent to continuously evaluate the curriculum to identify what is working & what improvements can be made
