The Position:
The Intercept is looking for an energetic investigative reporter to expand our public health, science, & environmental coverage. The reporter will cover Covid-19, emerging disease surveillance, biosecurity & biosafety, pandemic preparedness, as well as other public health threats such as chemical pollution. Candidates should have excellent sourcing among scientists, government agencies, public health advocates, and/or the pharmaceutical & chemical industries. This position emphasizes enterprise reporting but candidates should also be willing & able to produce incisive, quick-turn breaking news stories & thoughtful reported interventions into the public conversation. A track record of success with FOIA & other public records requests is highly desirable.
Qualifications:
- At least five years experience as a reporter/writer
- Proven track record of breaking significant stories
- Ability to file clean, accurate copy on complex stories
- Extensive knowledge, sources, & subject matter expertise as well as an independent perspective
- Sharp instincts about what makes a good story for The Intercept
- Ability to respond to shifting priorities & demands, based on organizational needs & the news cycle
- Must be a generous & fully engaged member of our environment & public health teams & equally adept at working independently
- Ability to multitask, generating powerful, original stories while executing assigned pieces with speed & grace
