A new paradigm of computing

Magic Leap is a pioneer in spatial computing, developing groundbreaking augmented reality technology that seamlessly blends digital content with the real world. As the creator of the next computing platform, our mixed reality devices unlock new possibilities for how people interact with & experience their surroundings.

Magic Leap could be your place if you want to be part of a united team where everyone is empowered & trusted to make an impact. At Magic Leap, you can explore innovative solutions & use your talents to solve real-world problems. Working alongside industry experts, you can grow your skills & amplify human potential at the intersection of the physical & digital worlds. We know that successful change & progress accelerate diverse perspectives. As we shape our future, everyone's voice matters. Together, we can reimagine the world of work and, with our bold partners, make the impossible possible.

The opportunity

As a Structural Simulation Engineer within our  Simulation Team, you would be part of a high performing & highly empowered team focused on identifying & solving structural challenges with our device before products are ever built, optimizing device design to ensure desired performance, & root causing issues once devices are assembled & unforeseen issues arise. In this role you will have all the tools at your fingertips (both simulation & testing) required to meet whatever your current tasking demands.

Due to the nascent nature of the Augmented Reality (AR) industry, you will have the pleasure of working on truly unsolved issues & will constantly be required to create new ways to evaluate, understand, & solve different design challenges. This role is highly multi-disciplinary & works closely with our mechanical engineering design team, electrical engineering team, new product integration team, human factors team, optics team, materials team, & experimentalist team. If you enjoy technical challenges, can consider problems from a system level perspective, like making an impact, & take pleasure in communicating complex findings in a manner that all audiences can understand, this may be a position for you.

*We are interested in candidates with intermediate to senior level experience. Level will be determined by the interview process & overall fit to the requirements.*

What youll do

  • Couple first principle physics understanding with ANSYS FEA simulation tools (Mechanical & LS-Dyna) to evaluate Magic Leap devices for:
    • Optical metrics

    • Robustness Under Normal User Loading

    • Drop Robustness

    • Fatigue Performance of Dynamic Components

    • Human Comfort

    • Manufacturability & Ease of Assembly

    • Etc.
  • Following initial evaluation of any of the above, identify & communicate risk assessments, recommended optimizations, & other findings to the various internal stakeholders

  • Grow Magic Leaps ability to properly characterize materials & adhesives by guiding testing efforts such that results are meaningful to the simulation team

  • Guide the development of test protocol for sub-assembly level components

  • Periodically create custom scripts to post-process results into meaningful findings

  • Help other teams understand device level risks & help focus their efforts appropriately

The experience you bring

  • 2-5+ years of professional experience in structural simulation

  • Minimum of a Masters Degree in Mechanical, Structural, or Aerospace engineering

  • Strong understanding of mechanics & FEA theory, & experience putting said knowledge into practice

  • Demonstrated system level thinking & understanding

  • Highly self-motivated & capable of balancing different priorities effectively

  • Fearlessness in asking questions to quickly & effectively comprehend stakeholders needs and/or challenges

Its exciting if you also have

  • Knowledge of ANSYS Mechanical and/or ANSYS LS-Dyna

  • Knowledge of at least one programming/scripting language (Matlab, Python, etc.)
