WHO WE ARE

New York magazine audio is looking for our next audio engineer for Pivot & a new interview show hosted by Kara Swisher.

Pivot is an established franchise hosted by tech journalist Swisher & NYU Professor Scott Galloway. Every Tuesday & Friday they offer sharp, unfiltered insights into the biggest stories in tech, business & politics. Kara is also launching a new interview show that will air twice weekly & feature guests from business, tech, entertainment, politics & basically anyone Swisher finds interesting.

As part of the team creating the new show, & developing the Pivot franchise, your goal will be to ensure the highest quality listening experience. Youll oversee recording sessions, clean up tape & use your expertise to create a consistent mix. Youll be joining New York Magazine's growing audio team & work with our podcast teams to edit, score & sound design segments that delight listeners.

If youre the right person for the role you have an instinct for natural dialogue editing & pacing. You have an innate understanding of where & how to use music & other sonic elements to elevate a show. You know which plugins to use, when to use them sparingly, & when to go bonkers. You can quickly & expertly edit two-way conversations, or mix more complex segments with clips, narration, field tape, ambi & music. You also know the importance of file maintenance & archiving.

You can manage your time well to meet the near-daily deadlines without compromising high production standards. You are a detail-oriented person who can confidently deliver a polished final mix & know how to prioritize your time when required under compressed newsroom deadline. You should have experience with audio tools ranging from microphones & portable recorders to plug-ins for basic techniques & plug-ins for the bizarre. Proficiency with a DAW is required.  We use Pro Tools here.

WHAT YOULL DO

  • Sound design, compose original music & score the new show
  • Record, cut, sound-design, score & mix four episodes of conversation-based shows a week
  • Assist with technical setup of studio & tech checks with hosts & guests
  • Run remote recordings on Riverside & trouble-shoot issues as needed
  • Clean up tape, tackling iffy-sounding moments & smoothing producer cuts
  • Collaborate & communicate with director, producers & senior producer on mic notes & deadlines
  • Deliver final mixes to a specific standard
  • Cross-train & fill in for other shows as needed
  • Maintain the archives for Pivot & the new Swisher show
