The Role:

As a Lead Web Application Developer you will work on big problems in literacy education, from building the infrastructure necessary to handle tens of millions of users to solving novel problems in text complexity & personalization. You will work on an interdisciplinary team spanning Engineering, Design, & Product to ensure Newsela ships daily product, which will be used in 90% of schools nationwide. As the technical expert, you will be a key voice throughout the entire development process, including initial discovery (where youll be expected to empathize with the end-users & play an integral role in outlining the overall solution so that not only is the software performing as intended, but that adoption & usage follows suit). You will co-lead your product development team, which will own a specific product feature, & have the opportunity to exercise long-term thinking to iterate on the product over time. In addition to focusing on code, you will be a key defender of design details as you bring your code to life.

Why Youll Love This Role:

Reporting to the VP, Application Development, you will be part of a highly collaborative interdisciplinary team, & will own a user-facing part of Newselas product. This role gets you flexing your product & design skills, as well as your expertise in software development. You get to be part of a team that designs solutions as well as builds them; you will be shaping the product to ensure that beautifully designed features are shipped to Newselas national user base. As we scale, youll be releasing code daily. And because we're a technology company focused on improving the way students learn, youll be part of an engineering culture that values teaching, learning, & questioning. Youll continue to build our culture of learning by providing close mentorship to your team of developers as needed, & regular one-on-ones, all to ensure youre growing your teams technical skills & interests.

Why Well Love You:

You have 5+ years of professional full-stack web application development experience, & competency in our tech stack (Javascript, Python, REST). You also possess foundational knowledge of CSS, HTML, & Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. You practice lean & flexible software development, are familiar with kanban boards, & have demonstrated experience building in responsive design natively without a frontend framework (across mobile, tablet, & desktop). Ideally, you are very comfortable writing in Javascript against the browsers native API.

In addition to your coding skills, you are able to work & communicate with design, engineering, data, & product teams to produce timely, healthy code. You can seamlessly illustrate concepts from a single function all the way to a system architecture, defend the intention of your solutions, & can explain the implications to technical & non-tech experts alike. You bring an informed point of view to your team, & pay as close attention to design as you do to your code. Leveraging both your technical expertise & your innate ability to teach, you are able to lead, coach, & motivate a small team of developers through large-scale, cross-functional projects.
