Hi, we're Oscar. Were hiring a Senior Data Scientist, Utilization Management to join our Data team.

About the role:

Oscar is restructuring health care to make it easy, affordable, & seamless for consumers to access high value care. Oscars data team is focused on pushing our understanding of this complex landscape. Insurance companies sit on a trove of data that is both broad & deep, spanning financial claims, clinical medical records, & rich product interaction data from our members. Connecting the dots across these datasets gives us unique insight into how the healthcare system functions & allows us to improve care coordination, better manage risk, build higher-performing provider networks, & create a standout consumer experience in our product. At Oscar, we are looking for bright & curious data minded individuals to join our team of 30+ researchers, data scientists, & analysts to leverage our efforts!

In this role, youll provide key data science & analytical partnership to the Utilization Management team. Utilization management is a key function of Oscar to ensure members receive affordable, high quality care. You will be building the backbone of our modeling approach to integrate with our homegrown utilization management platform & optimize our strategy in the domain.

You will report into an Associate Director, Data Science. This is a hybrid role, & you will work part of the time in the New York office & part of the time working remotely.

Responsibilities:

  • Quantify the direct & indirect costs & benefits of our Utilization Management program to define optimal options for clients
  • Build models to recommend where to loosen review requirements without incurring undue risk to improve member & provider experience
  • Design models to predict member level utilization of medical services
  • Partner with the Product & Engineering teams to determine opportunities for data model improvements & workflow optimization
  • Iterate on source of truth datasets for analytics & business use cases throughout the company
  • Serve as the anchor of the Utilization Management arm of the Data team, eventually managing a small team of junior Data Scientists

Requirements:

  • You have 6+ years of relevant work experience or a Masters degree in a quantitative field with 4+ years of experience
  • You use data science tools like SQL & Python
  • Youre excited about being a decision-maker & a leader
  • You are able to navigate between high level strategic thinking & granular methods of problem solving
  • You know when to look outside the data to solve problems

Bonus points:

  • Knowledge of or previous work experience in health care, health economics, or health insurance
