The Life desk at VICE.com is looking for an energetic, motivated deputy editor to be our strategic lead. The right person has a reporting & service background with a track record in producing pieces that have gained significant traction & created informed conversations around health, wellness, self-care, sex, relationships, & work. They also have an excellent story sense, a talent for managing people, & a critical eye for emerging trends & themes that will guide them toward thoughtful, timely, punchy, sometimes funny, always human stories.
The ideal deputy for this desk is a rigorous editor who is persnickety about copy & capable of getting even the trickiest of drafts into publishable shape. This person will serve as a senior leader across the newsroom & will motivate their team to produce their best work. They will think strategically & creatively about packaging & formats, always looking for the most interesting way to tell a story, & seek opportunities to collaborate with the social, video, & events teams.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Overseeing editors & writers (staff & freelance) in conceiving & sharpening pitches & executing a strong daily mix of stories
- Editing & top-editing quick hits & longer pieces
- Guiding editors on packaging & formatting decisions
- Recruiting & working with a diverse stable of talented writers
- Collaborating across the social, video, & events teams to help design ideal packaging for pieces
- At least 5 years of editing experience in one or more of the above beats
- A quick metabolism for generating conversation-starting stories
- Proven experience delivering a mix of service & reported stories that set themselves apart
- A clear idea of the themes that matter & how to approach them
- An aversion to clichs & boring writing
