The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.
On the Subscriptions team, we aim to support a more thoughtful American public by building the subscription services to power great journalism. This includes enforcing resiliency, security and data integrity of registered users and subscription data, third party integrations of single sign-on, payment platforms, bulk subscription partners, and self-service tools for subscription and account management.
We pride ourselves on maintaining an inclusive and diverse culture that values continuous learning, elegant problem solving, supportive teamwork, and delivering value.
Our day-to-day stack includes: Python, ES6, and Docker, third party integrations, and data consolidation pipelines.
Other tools we use: ReactJS, Cypress, Jenkins, Terraform, as well as a variety of AWS services including ECS, SQS, SNS, and Lambdas.
As a Senior Engineer on our Subscriptions team you will
Hit the ground running within our established patterns for Python microservices and utilizing serverless and pub/sub patterns on AWS to build new subscription features.
Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, Audience Research, and other colleagues within your team and beyond, to collaboratively tackle difficult and ambiguous problems.
Advocate for new technologies, patterns, and best practices as needed.
Participate and contribute to stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives at the agile team level and up.
Perform code reviews with helpful and meaningful feedback for your teammates.
Research, document, note trade-offs and recommend potential solutions around future product features.
Encourage and support the development of teammates, including pair programming and knowledge sharing.

A strong communicator: You can distill complex technical ideas for a diverse set of stakeholders from developers, to editors and product managers. You can write clear and concise documentation.
A critical thinker: You don't need to be told how to get from point A to point B and are up to the challenge of figuring how new features can elegantly fit into a modern web stack.
A team player: You take initiative in offering help to team members, including pair programming and knowledge sharing; You encourage and support the development of your teammates.
Adaptable: The idea of working on multiple projects of different sizes on different technology stacks excites you.
