Organizational Context

TED Circles is an open platform of small groups that meet for conversations about ideas. TED believes that meaningful conversations create interpersonal connections that collectively strengthen communities. Currently, the TED community experiences face-to-face conversations a few times a year at best. Since its valuable to TEDs mission of spreading ideas to scale these meaningful conversations, we began TED Circles. This new TED community is free & open to everyone. Volunteer hosts invite guests to regularly meet in small groups for meaningful face-to-face conversations about Talks related to a monthly theme. Circles digitally share their takeaways in order to cross-pollinate each others thinking & converge into a global conversation. 

 

Position Description

TED Circles seeks a Program Coordinator who will report directly to the Program Manager & work with a small cohort of TED colleagues who contribute their skills (e.g. curation, communications, tech) to TED Circles. This person will join TED Circles at a very early phase in its development & be pivotal in positioning the program for scalable, long-term success.

 

Specifically, the role will focus on three priorities:

  • Optimizing the TED Circles host experience including on-boarding new hosts, building relationships & answering inquiries of current hosts, & updating multimedia host resources as/when best practices surface
  • Optimizing the TED Circles guest experience including collaborating on the monthly programming of themes & Talks, answering inquiries of current guests, & creating multimedia resources as/when necessary 
  • Igniting a global conversation including marketing to potential hosts, highlighting takeaways shared from across the Circles platform, & collaborating with communications colleagues to repackage content for social sharing

 

Were looking for someone action-oriented & creative, able to shape a new role, & motivated to iterate a strategy in order to deliver results. This person will be joining a small team that is committed to doing whatever it takes to foster face-to-face interactions & create a global conversation.

 

Responsibilities

Optimizing host experience:

  • Serve as the first point person for Circle hosts
  • Foster strong ongoing relationships with Circle hosts by keeping abreast of the experiences they share in the digital community, maintaining regular points of communication, & providing light-touch advice as needed
  • Propose, edit, & create multimedia resources that highlight hosting best practices (e.g. docs, slides, videos)
  • Build & deepen the connection amongst Circle hosts by developing community exchanges through video calls, digital events, & in-person events
  • Introduce a new digital product platform for hosts to use
  • Other duties & special projects as may be assigned from time to time as the program evolves

 

Optimizing guest experience:

  • Serve as the first point person for Circle guests
  • Develop an approach for garnering guest feedback while respecting guests relationship with their Circle host
  • Participate in the curation of monthly theme & Talks
  • Propose, edit, & create multimedia resources that enhance the guest experience (e.g. docs, slides, videos)
  • Introduce a new digital product platform for hosts to use
  • Other duties & special projects as may be assigned from time to time as the program evolves

 

Igniting global conversation:

  • Execute targeted digital campaigns to reach high-potential hosts
  • Identify & forge new network partnerships to reach high-potential hosts
  • Highlight takeaways shared by Circles by keeping abreast of takeaways they share in the digital community
  • Propose how takeaways can be repackaged & shared throughout the Circles community & on social media
  • Liaise with communications colleagues on the creation of social media content
  • Other duties & special projects as may be assigned from time to time as the program evolves

 

Qualifications/skills

  • Bachelors degree 
  • 3 years of related experience in community management at a non-profit.
  • Creative, curious, personable, team-oriented, & excited to join a high energy, hands-on team at TED.
  • Demonstrated passion & track record for accelerating community growth & deepening connection.
  • Self-starter manages workload independently & within a two-person team, serving as backup in case of absence.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational, time-management, & problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, presentation), comfortable representing the TED Circles program.
  • Motivation to set & achieve ambitious goals with minimal guidance.
  • Eagerness to constantly improve, work collaboratively (internally & externally), & adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficient in Mac, Google applications, Keynote, email, & Salesforce with the aptitude to learn new software.
  • Multilingual & world travel experience preferred but not required.
  • Based on New York City & able to work in our Manhattan office 5 days a week

 

Workplace conditions

This is a full-time paid 6-month contractor position based out of our NYC office with the potential to stay on longer.
