Role Summary

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer Lead or Manager to help us scale up & improve our data infrastructure capabilities as we rapidly expand into new products & new territories.  

Cover is growing very quickly, & we rely heavily on our data analytics capabilities to always steer us in the right direction.  As one of Covers first batch of Data Engineers, you will have a great opportunity to define how we create, process, interpret data & lead this team.  This is a significant responsibility, & we are looking for someone armed with exceptional technical skills & the know-how of building out world class data infrastructure from the ground level.  You will work closely with engineers & business analysts to build systems that ensure Covers data is accessible, accurate, & scalable.    

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, construct, test & maintain data architecture

  • Design, build, & launch new data extraction, transformation, & loading processes in production 

  • Work with business analysts to optimize queries, dashboards, reports, & other infrastructure

  • Perform all of the necessary data transformations to populate data into a warehouse that is optimized for reporting 

  • Ensure architecture will support the growing requirements of the business

  • Proactively discover opportunities for data acquisition

  • Prepare data for business analysis & statistical modeling

  • Guiding the data team on day to day responsibilities as well as strategic planning with various internal partners.  

Requirements: 

  • 4+ years of relevant experience 

  • A self-starter who has the ability to prioritize multiple competing projects 

  • Expertise in SQL & NoSQL databases such as Postgresql

  • Knowledge of multiple data formats such as tabular data, flat data files, CSV, JSON & XML

  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, or similar

  • Strong analytical skills related to working with unstructured datasets

  • Prior experience in data modeling, ETL & reporting 

  • Ability to work cross functionally with multiple business units

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Math or a related technical field 

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills

  • Previous experience leading or managing a data team

Nice to Have: 

  • Basic understanding of the insurance industry

  • Worked at or founded a startup (i.e. built something)

  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g. Periscope, Tableau etc.) 

  • Experience with streaming data systems

  • Experience with Hadoop, MapReduce

  • Experience in people leadership and/or management
