Databases are the beating heart of every business in the world.

Cockroach Labs is the creator of CockroachDB, the most highly evolved cloud-native, distributed SQL database on the planet that scales fast, survives anything, & thrives anywhere. We created CockroachDB to unshackle teams from the constraints of their database. Join us on our mission to enable every developer to build world-changing applications!

About the Role

The Migrations team owns the journey to CockroachDB from other database vendors.  The teams goal is to ensure that when customers want to move their existing workloads to CRDB, that they can do so as easily as possible, & with the least amount of downtime. Landing migrations onto CRDB is key to the companys success, & if you join this team, youll have a front row seat to our dramatic revenue growth. Most importantly, youll also get work in several areas of the CRDB codebase, & learn how the various pieces interact.

We are looking for backend software engineers who are excited about growing an open-source cloud-native distributed SQL database to join our database teams. Working closely with other engineers & product managers on both the cloud & database teams, you will be part of a collaborative culture striving to make data easy at global scale.

You Will

  • Contribute to the growth of the open source database, CockroachDB. You bring your expertise & commitment to excellence to help build a database that makes data easy for everyone.
  • Develop in Go, but if you don't know it you'll learn while you're here.
  • "Devise scalable solutions that make it easier for customers to move their workloads into CockroachDB"
  • Improve the performance of CockroachDB to allow for faster data loading & more efficient migrated queries.
  • Optionally, engineers with a background or interest in fullstack engineering will be able to contribute to our UIs.

The Expectations

In the first month you will join your engineering team & start to learn about our production systems, software development workflow, & the architecture of CockroachDB & CockroachCloud. We believe that it's essential for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology, company, & our culture.

After 3 months you'll be a fully-fledged member of your team & comfortable contributing to CockroachDB & our migrations tooling. You will begin to determine the parts of our migrations journey that most interest you & work with your manager to focus your efforts on projects that align with your interests & our goals.

As our team grows you will have the opportunity to shape the direction of migrations to  CockroachCloud & CockroachDB. We want our users to have a phenomenal experience using our product & you play a crucial role in making CockroachDB a joy to use. We also offer technical training & experienced mentorship to help you learn & grow into whatever you wish it to be.

You Have

  • A passion for working on complex technical products & have exposure to topics such as distributed systems, concurrency control, data replication, file systems, or SQL processing.
  • Comfort using programming languages like Go, C/C++, Java, & Python (and optionally React/TypeScript).
  • An understanding of system and/or UI design.
  • Experience building collaborative relationships with your colleagues. You enjoy being part of the code review process & partnering with your teammates on challenging problems.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • A BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

The Team

You will have the opportunity to report to a member of our engineering leadership team based on the project you work on at Cockroach Labs.  In addition, you will get to work closely with the senior leadership including:

Reporting to Adam Storm - Sr. Director of Engineering

Adam is a Sr. Director of Engineering at Cockroach Labs.  In his more than two decades in the database industry, he's worked on various aspects of database technology including self-managing databases, transaction management, accelerating analytics processing through columnar storage, & novel databases architectures to separate compute & storage. He is a frequent public speaker, & has co-authored a number of academic papers.  Currently, Adam is focussed on improving the customer experience of migrating workloads to CockroachDB.  When hes not at work, you can find Adam running, fiddling with some culinary gadget, or spending time doing almost anything with his wife & two daughters.

Isaac Wong - VP of Engineering

Isaac is responsible for the health of the engineering organization at Cockroach Labs. He partners closely with teams to ensure we have a balanced culture that promotes quality & innovation in pursuit of our goals. Before joining Cockroach Labs Isaac was in life sciences for 16 years with Medidata Solutions where he had a front row seat on the exciting ride from a 30 person startup to more than 2000 people worldwide. But the lure of distributed, resilient, & consistent SQL databases, along with the amazing technology & culture at Cockroach Labs proved too much. When not working he likes to draw, play the piano, & search NYC for cannoli's with his wife & kids.
