About the job

Twilio is growing rapidly & seeking a Vice President of Engineering for Twilio-Segment, our industry leading Customer Data Platform. The Segment Core, Vice President of Engineering, leads the engineering organization that drives product development execution, infrastructure, liability, operations & efficiency via software across Segment Core through focused execution, effective collaboration & influence across engineering groups throughout Twilio.  This leader will be accountable for product reliability & infrastructure, product development & delivery, managing budgets, growing & developing your team, & business impact. You will be a critical member of the Segment Core & Data & Growth leadership team, reporting to the GM of Twilio-Segment Core.  

Responsibilities

In this role, youll:

  • Deliver industry leading product innovation, technical scale, & simplicity for partner integrations, our customer data pipeline & platform, real time event & object oriented data processing, data storage, & exceptional external & internal developer experiences.

    • Accountable for overall security of platform in collaboration with the Twilio Security team
  • Lead & grow a global organization of best-in-class engineering Leaders, managers & individual contributors - a team of about 200 & doubling in the next year or two. 

  • Identify & qualify new products, services, & processes to improve product development, product reliability, performance engineering, incident management, & observability solutions.

  • Interact extensively across all functional teams within Twilio & have significant exposure to our executive leadership.

  • Ensure the consistent exercise of appropriate judgment & discretion in evaluating opportunities, measuring progress, & holding your organization & others accountable for delivering a world class customer experience.

  • Work closely with senior leadership & product teams to enable our engineers to ship fast & predictably with confidence, while ensuring the efficient use of resources & providing an amazing customer experience, even in times of crisis.

  • You will be a Twilio technical ambassador, a recognized leader in reliability, quality, sustainability, & operational excellence

Qualifications

Required:

  • 10+ years of hands on software engineering & engineering management experience, preferably delivering a highly scalable service with billions of daily transactions 

  • 10+ years of operational experience, running large scale distributed systems such as Kubernetes & related systems across multiple global & regionalized instances

  • 10+ years of experience creating & scaling data platforms & pipelines, ETL systems, & partner integrations
  • Experience scaling engineering organizations from 200 to 400 engineers & managing a global footprint of engineering teams (including India) 
  • Bachelors degree in CS, EE or equivalent experience required.  

Desired:

  • Proven track record of setting & meeting aggressive goals

  • Proven experience in building, launching & operating complex distributed systems at scale

  • Extensive experience providing technical direction to teams & stakeholders & aligning organizational priorities

  • Demonstrated success mentoring engineering leaders cross-organizationally 

  • Proven track record of balancing long-term critical thinking with tactical execution of multiple development plans

    • Demonstrated success building & maintaining a platform that services both customers & internal stakeholders. 
  • High-growth technology company experience, ideally in a platform company that has scaled to hundreds of millions of users, using a public cloud such as AWS & a modern tech stack including microservices & containerization

  • Highly analytical with the ability to translate between strategic business decisions & their quantitative implications

  • Ability to think critically & objectively; excellent problem solving skills & the ability to make quick decisions based on business demands

  • Rigorous, great organizational skills, comfortable with ambiguity

  • Ability to distill complex issues into structured frameworks & concrete action plans

  • Excellent communication & social skills, ability to be personable yet persistent

Location 

This role will be based in the US remote or located near one of our US offices. We have a remote-first work environment.

  • The estimated pay range for this role, based in Colorado, is $300,000- $360,000

  • Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan.

The successful candidates starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, & geographic location within the state. This role is also eligible to participate in Twilios equity plan & for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
