About the role

As an Incubation Manager within our incubator, you will be in a visible, entrepreneurial & autonomous role, requiring sound judgment & a keen ability to work well in ambiguous situations. This role will primarily focus on developing & testing incubation domains, use cases & concepts that may lead to new businesses, business models, capabilities & technologies that Store N8 incubates & commercializes. This often means being the point person for 2+ concurrent business strategies & a pipeline of incubation opportunities. You will execute market research (both primary & secondary), develop business strategy, manage the incubation funnel, perform build/buy/partner analyses & act as portfolio company liaison. You will also need to be acutely aware of leading technology innovations, how the retail industry is evolving, & key customer trends to inform all aspects of your role.

What Youll do

  • Market Research & Hypothesis Generation
    • Quickly get up to speed & develop deep subject matter expertise on the market landscape for new potential business opportunities
    • Test hypotheses & emerging business models using both primary (e.g. surveys, interviews, focus groups) & secondary research techniques
    • Quantify market potential using various techniques including customer & business value chain analyses, supply & demand side market sizing & needs-based customer segmentation
    • Build a network of key players startups, established companies, industry leaders, & SMEs
    • Attend industry events (conferences, meet-ups, etc.) to remain in-the-know about relevant focus areas
    • Review whitepapers & technical documentation to understand nascent or often misunderstood technologies & hype-cycles
    • Clearly present key points & findings to senior leadership
  • Business Strategy Development
    • Synthesize research to develop POVs & strategic recommendations on potential investment vectors, reflecting market opportunity, strategic fit & execution considerations
    • Coordinate/build relationships across relevant Walmart business units to get stakeholder buy-in for strategic recommendations on potential businesses
    • Participate in developing build/buy/partner analyses & commercial due diligence
    • Develop holistic recommendations & execution plans to validate & invest in potential businesses, incorporating key factors including competitive advantages, alignment with business priorities, ROI, etc.
    • Build financial models with sound assumptions to project investment needs for a given opportunity
  • Portfolio Company Liaison:
    • Act as a key operating partner during early stages of portfolio company development, partnering with CEO/GM to develop business plans, financial plans, investment stage- gates & board materials
    • Act as a go-between for companies with Walmart to ensure teams can easily & strategically leverage the Walmart ecosystem

What Youll Need

  • 6-8 years experience in management consulting, investment banking, early-stage startup, or venture capital roles with a focus on retail and/or startups
  • Bachelors degree
  • MBA & technical or operational experience are a strong plus
  • Hands-on experience developing research plans for hypothesis-based strategy development & market assessments including executing primary research, managing innovation funnels, capability due diligence, synthesizing findings to develop strategy deliverables & financial modeling
  • Passion & understanding for entrepreneurship & innovation, & a desire to help startups succeed
  • Strong communication, presentation & project management skills, with high attention to detail
  • Excellent relationship-building skills, as this role requires cross-functional collaboration with various stakeholders
  • Experience working with senior leaders in large organizations & demonstrated ability to influence
  • Ability to self-manage & manage up, with an understanding of when to operate independently & when to rely on leadership for support & oversight
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment & excel under pressure
  • The desire to be both creative & technically-minded (interest in both design/strategy & analysis/metrics)
