About This Class
95% of the information on the web is written language. Type is likely to be your users first point of contact with your brand, interface or marketing message. In the race for peoples attention the details matter & the details start with type.
Studies have demonstrated that when type is set well, it improves the mood, comprehension, & cognitive skills of the reader. As a result, increasing numbers of executives & entrepreneurs are realizing that typography matters to their brand, their customers, & their success.
Students will receive a hands-on introduction to what typography is, why it matters, & several key features of good typography. Through a blend of lecture slides & practical exercises, students will learn to see typography with a critical eye & leave having learnt to make better choices about their own work, whether in branding decisions, user experience, or just crafting a new rsum.
About the Instructor
Lara McCormick
Creative Director,
Exploratorium
Lara McCormick is a nationally recognized designer & educator, & received her MFA in Design from the School of Visual Arts as well as a post-graduate degree in Typography from Cooper Union. Lara is the author of Playing with Type: 50 Graphic Experiments for Exploring Typographic Design Principles published by Rockport Press, & her work has been featured in notable design publications including HOW magazine, PRINT, Graphic Design USA, & Design Observer. She is a gifted speaker & gives presentations & workshops on design & typography across North America for organizations including AIGA, AdobeMAX & TEDx. She is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Sappi Ideas that Matter award, a judge for Communication Arts Typography Annual in 2017, & selected educator by Print magazine in their Spring 2017 issue. She is committed to design education, social activism & investigating change. Currently, Lara is the Creative Director at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, CA.
