Kai Haley - Google Head of Design Relations

Bio: Kai Haley is an experienced leader in the Design & Innovation Industry, focused on developing vision, strategy & launches for both Google product teams & it's top partners. She leads the Design Relations team at Google, which supports design excellence for designers & developers building on Google's platforms. As one of the founders & leads of the Google Sprint Master Academy, she has trained over 800 Sprint Masters to drive innovation across Google's diverse product areas. She is passionate about creating & teaching human-centered methodologies that increase cross-functional collaboration to create more meaningful products that improve people's lives & the world.

Talk: The Evolution of Google Design Sprints

Abstract: Design Sprints were developed at Google by a group of courageous UX leaders who were looking for a better way to work. Based on the premise of clearing calendars & bringing together a cross-functional team to focus on a clearly defined problem, they developed a structured format that utilized user-centered methods to create & test ideas quickly. The results were so effective that the methodology was codified, taught & adopted across multiple product areas. Google Ventures created an approach that was optimized for working with their portfolio startups, Google X applied their flavor to blue sky moonshots like Loon & Self-driving cars, the Ads & Commerce group optimized for large scale innovation of Google's key revenue streams, & Corporate Engineering applied it to internal tools & processes. In this talk we will explore the nuances of the different approaches & the way the methodology has evolved inside & outside of Google over time.

David Bland - CEO of Precoil & Author of Testing Business Ideas

Bio: David J Bland is an author & founder based in Silicon Valley. In 2015, he founded Precoil to help companies find product market fit using lean startup, design thinking & business model innovation.

David has helped validate new products & businesses at companies such as GE, Toyota, Adobe, HP, Behr & more.

David is the co-author of Testing Business Ideas, a Wiley business book with Alexander Osterwalder.

Talk: Testing Business Ideas

Abstract: Last year David was approached by Alex Osterwalder to co-author a new book about testing business ideas. They had both observed a gap between sketching out an idea & finding practical ways to rapidly test it. Building off of Business Model Generation, Lean Startup & Value Proposition Design books, they decided to curate a list of experiments for people who are stuck making progress on their idea. They've identified three major themes from design thinking. The first, desirability, describes whether or not people want the solution. The second, viability, speaks to if you can create a sustainable business with the solution. The third, feasibility, goes into the steps to run the infrastructure. In this talk, David will give you a sneak preview of his new book on this subject & the upcoming Testing Business Ideas workshop.
