Hi, we're Oscar. We're hiring a Senior Counsel to join our Legal team.

About the role

The Senior Counsel is a key member of the Legal team responsible for driving & executing the organizations legal strategy, counseling teams & leaders on legal obligations, advising on strategy, & providing thought leadership to further Oscars success in their area. This position works closely with Oscars departmental & company leadership teams. This role may have one or more direct reports, & is responsible for the identification & development of talent within their area.

You will report to the Associate General Counsel.

If you live within commutable distance to our New York City office ( in Hudson Square), our Tempe office (off the 101 at University Ave), or our Los Angeles office (in Marina Del Rey), you will be expected to come into the office at least two days each week. Otherwise, this is a remote / work-from-home role.

You must reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, or Washington, D.C. Note, this list of states is subject to change. #LI-Remote

Pay Transparency:

The base pay for this role in the states of California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, & Washington is: $192,000 - 252,000 per year. The base pay for this role in all other locations is: $172,200 - 226,800 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program company equity grants & annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with key business partners to develop a cohesive & comprehensive legal strategy that aligns with the organizations strategic business objectives
  • Effectively execute on the organizations legal strategy & ensure that a variety of complex legal matters are managed in a cost-effective manner
  • Analyze & distill complex legal issues into easily understandable content so Oscar can move corporate goals & objectives forward
  • Serve as the national subject matter expert for one or more legal areas critical to the business enterprise
  • Provide day-to-day legal advice related to Oscars leadership, departments, & lines of business
  • Manage a team of legal professionals & ensure the team is appropriately staffed & resourced to manage the Companys legal needs. Identify & develop talent within the team to ensure strong output & succession 
  • Engage cross-functionally to ensure the organization has the systems, processes & operations to effectively respond to legal matters
  • Develop & maintain a comprehensive budget
  • Develop & maintain metrics which demonstrate trends on the organizations legal activities 
  • Act as lead counsel for the organization on high profile & material legal matters
  • Serve as legal advisor on matters before state & federal bodies as necessary
  • Compliance with all applicable laws & regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Attorney in good standing with J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
  • Law license in good standing & the ability to register as In-House Counsel in NY State (NY bar admission is not required)
  • 10+ years of relevant experience at a top tier law firm, in-house counsel, and/or insurance regulatory agency

Bonus Points

  • Litigation experience in Florida, California, Texas, and/or New York jurisdictions
  • Experience with startups

Pay Transparency: 

Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education, & experience.
