Senior Director Head of Data Engineering - US Remote position with occasional visits to Needham HQ

This is a leadership position that will have exposure across the entire business, influencing the vision & implementation of Data Engineering to help business teams drive substantial financial impact with data as a core company asset while helping consumers leverage our product offerings like trip planning, experiences, media, hotels, restaurants, cruise & various content plus GenAI offerings. 

More specifically, Head of Data Engineering is a senior-level leadership position responsible for overseeing & leading the data engineering team within Tripadvisor. This team plays a crucial part in managing the data infrastructure, creating data assets & data products across the company, ensuring data quality & governance, while facilitating data-driven decision-making in partnership with analytics, data science & machine learning teams.

What youll do

The Head of Data Engineering is responsible for managing & leading the data engineering team to design, build, & maintain data pipelines, data warehousing, & data infrastructure to support the organization's data needs. This role ensures data quality, availability, & accessibility for various stakeholders, enabling data-driven decision-making across the company

Key Responsibilities:

• Leadership & Team Management:
• Lead & manage a geo-distributed teams of data engineers, data architects, & ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) specialists.
• Provide guidance, mentorship, & professional development opportunities to team members.
• Foster a collaborative & high-performance work culture within the data engineering team.
• Data Architecture & Infrastructure:
• Define & implement the data architecture & infrastructure strategy.
• Oversee the design & development of data pipelines, data warehouses, & data lakes.
• Ensure scalability, reliability, & performance of data systems.
• Data Quality & Governance:
• Establish & enforce data quality standards & data governance practices.
• Implement data validation & cleansing processes to maintain high-quality data.
• Ensure compliance with data privacy & security regulations.
• Data Integration & ETL:
• Manage the development of ETL processes to extract, transform, & load data from various sources.
• Integrate data from diverse systems & sources into a centralized repository.
• Optimize data integration workflows for efficiency & accuracy.
• Technology Stack Management:
• Evaluate & select data engineering tools & technologies.
• Keep up-to-date with industry trends & best practices.
• Manage relationships with vendors & third-party service providers.
• Data Collaboration:
• Collaborate with data science & Analytics Leaders, & business stakeholders to understand data requirements.
• Ensure that data is accessible to those who need it for analysis & reporting.
• Budget & Resource Management:
• Develop & manage the data engineering budget.
• Allocate resources effectively to meet project & organizational goals.

Skills & Experience:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science).

• Proven experience in data engineering, including ETL, data warehousing, & data integration.
• Strong leadership & team management skills.
• Proficiency with data engineering tools & technologies (e.g., SQL, Hadoop, Spark, data warehouses, ETL tools).
• Excellent problem-solving & analytical abilities.
• Knowledge of data privacy & security regulations.
• Strong communication & collaboration skills.
• Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) is often preferred.
• Industry-specific certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics, Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer) may be a plus.
