Were looking for a Senior Product Security Engineer who is passionate about building secure guardrails & paved roads for engineering teams.
As a member of the Security Platform team, you will report to the Senior Manager of Product Security. Our Security Platform team secures the development & environment of our engineers & production services. We achieve this by implementing controls that layer security into the groundwork of our engineering infrastructure, streamlining implementations, & measuring effectiveness. We help build the platform that ensures software development at DigitalOcean is safe, easy, & low-risk.
You will collaborate with other security teams & the rest of DigitalOcean to drive secure software design, reduce security risk in the organization, & empower engineers to make informed security decisions. Security at DO means solving incredibly complex problems at a high-scale that have real impact for our customers, our products, & the larger internet community.
What youll do:
Build secure-by-default guardrails for engineers (60%)
- Design & build internal tooling to provide engineering teams with secure-by-default configurations & libraries.
- Write robust, resilient, & maintainable software, primarily in Go & Python. You may sometimes work on a frontend.
- Prioritize the user experience (our customers are internal dev teams) to ensure securitys libraries & services are the easiest, fastest way to get work done.
Integrate SaaS & homegrown security solutions into developer workflows (30%)
- We like Semgrep, & believe it accelerates our ability to create guardrails around safe engineering practices. You will add to our growing corpus of custom, internal Semgrep rules.
- We do not believe in Security Obstructionism & carefully integrate a small number of vendor tools into our development pipelines. You will own the successful integration of these tools as well as build security initiatives around their data that empower engineers rather than add friction or blocking gates.
Cultivate & promote a security culture (10%)
- Champion an internal security culture (developer training, internal CTFs, etc.).
- Mentor software engineering teams in security best practices.
- Help oversee our vulnerability management framework (we call it security debt).
- Help DigitalOcean engineers understand how security events impact them. Do they need to worry about the next Log4j CVE? How does RetBleed impact DigitalOceans fleet?
What Youll Add to DigitalOcean:
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering projects, ideally with a security focus. We primarily develop in Go, Python, & JavaScript. You are comfortable writing robust code with good test coverage & can point to specific examples of projects youve successfully delivered in the past.
- Understanding of & ability to clearly communicate security topics & vulnerability classes (e.g. OWASP Top Ten). You need to understand why the current project provides security benefits to our engineers.
- A record of partnering with internal engineering teams to tackle security problems across an entire stack with empathy & creativity. Engineering teams are our partners, not our adversaries.
Preferred qualifications:
- Familiarity with technologies such as gRPC, Docker, Prometheus, Kubernetes, HashiCorp Vault, & GitHub Actions.
- Experience with microservice architectures, asynchronous & event-driven processing, & synchronous gRPC/HTTP-based requests.
- Strong analytical, communication, & organizational skills.
Why Youll Like Working for DigitalOcean:
- We innovate with purpose. Youll be a part of a cutting-edge technology company with an upward trajectory, who are proud to simplify cloud & AI so builders can spend more time creating software that changes the world. As a member of the team, you will be a Shark who thinks big, bold, & scrappy, like an owner with a bias for action & a powerful sense of responsibility for customers, products, employees, & decisions.
- We prioritize career development. At DO, youll do the best work of your career. You will work with some of the smartest & most interesting people in the industry. We are a high-performance organization that will always challenge you to think big. Our organizational development team will provide you with resources to ensure you keep growing.
