We are looking for an experienced database engineer with an operations background in building sustainable solutions for data storage & streaming platforms. Our teams mission statement is to provide tools & expertise to solve common operational problems, accelerating & simplifying product development. As part of the team, youll be working with a variety of data-related technologies, including MySQL, Clickhouse, Kafka, & Redis, in an effort to transform these technologies into platform services. NOTE: this is not a data scientist role, rather this role is to help design & build datastore-related platforms for internal stakeholder groups within DigitalOcean. This is an opportunity to build the services & systems that will accelerate the development of DigitalOceans cloud features. Services will provide highly available, operationally elegant solutions that serve as a foundation for a growing product base & serving a global audience. This is a high-impact role & youll be working with a large variety of product engineering teams across the company.
What Youll Be Doing:

Administration, operations, & performance tuning of Vitess-managed MySQL datastores ,with a focus on large-scale, sharded environments

Architecting new Vitess-based MySQL database infrastructure on bare metal

Delivering managed data platform solutions as a service that facilitate adoption & offer operational elegance

Working closely with product engineering & infrastructure teams to drive adoption of services throughout the company

Instrument & monitor services developed to ensure operational performance

Create tooling & automation to reduce operational burdens

Establishing best practices for development, deployment, & operations

Driving adoption of services throughout the company

Interact with developers & teams to resolve site & database issues
What Well Expect From You:
-
Experience supporting MySQL (ideally with Vitess or other sharding solutions) in a production environment, with in-depth knowledge of backups, high availability, sharding, & performance tuning

Distinguished track record developing & automating platform solutions that serve the needs of other engineering teams

Experience with other data technologies such as Kafka & Redis

Fluency in SQL, Python, Bash, or other scripting languages

Experience with Linux performance troubleshooting

Experience with configuration management tooling such as Chef & Ansible
What Wed Love You To Have:

An understanding of using ProxySQL & Kubernetes

Familiarity with continuous integration tools such as Concourse, GitHub Actions

Some familiarity with Go readability

Passion for production engineering done in a resilient fashion

You have a passion for not repeating yourself (DRY) by way of automation

Demonstrated expertise in being a data scientist - this role has much more production engineering focus

- We reward our employees. The salary range for this position is between $114,160.00 - $157,000.00 based on market data, relevant years of experience, & skills. You may qualify for a bonus in addition to base salary; bonus amounts are determined based on company & individual performance. We also provide equity compensation to eligible employees, including equity grants upon hire & the option to participate in our Employee Stock Purchase Program.
