About the job

This position will be part of a team of talented engineers within our Commerce Platform Billing Pipeline who build services & products that operate at a massive scale. This platform is central to Twilios core business & is responsible for services to process all billing events & provide financial services for the company. The team is working toward building a platform for the future that hides the complexity that comes from complex, distributed financial systems. 

The successful candidate will design, build, & operate core platform services that help transition our platform to the next generation architecture. These services work for all Twilio customers, regardless of their scale & billing complexity.

This position is needed to build high-quality, innovative & fully performing software that complies with coding standards & technical design. This is to build & integrate services that continuously improve our ability to provide products to customers while simultaneously delivering industry leading availability. We do this by leveraging technologies that include AWS cloud infrastructure & APIs, Apache Kafka, Rest APIs(OpenAPI compliance), while also building our own services or contributing to open source projects. 

Responsibilities

In this role, youll:

  • Improve your knowledge of highly available & scalable distributed systems & use this knowledge to build new features into our platform.
  • Design, implement, & operate both new features on our current services as well as new services that will be built from scratch.
  • Leverage your excellent communication & written skills to articulate the "why" of the solution you are proposing, & have a good understanding of your teams priorities & the customer impact.
  • Troubleshoot & fix operational issues & have the opportunity to improve the troubleshooting procedures & tools.
  • Execute full software development life cycle (SDLC).
  • Develop flowcharts & documentation to identify solutions.
  • Write well-designed, testable code.
  • Document & maintain software functionality.
  • Troubleshoot, debug & upgrade existing systems.

Required:

As a Commerce Platform engineer, you will design & build core platform services, REST APIs & take part in transitioning our platform to next generation architecture. We run on AWS cloud infrastructure & use AWS cloud data store, messaging services SNS, SQS, Aurora RDS etc. 

  • 5+ years of work experience building highly scalable products.
  • 3+ years of programming experience in Java/Microservices writing clean code.
  • 1 + years of experience contributing to the architecture & design (architecture, design patterns, reliability & scaling) of new & current systems.
  • Expert level knowledge in Object Oriented programming with a successful track record.
  • Experience working with stakeholders at all levels - be able to dive into nuts-and-bolts of how things work as needed. 
  • Experience mentoring engineers & fostering an inclusive environment, where all points of view are welcomed & encouraged.
  • Experience building scalable software including distributed systems infrastructure, business logic for APIs or tooling to help debug mission critical applications.
  • Excellent experience debugging production infrastructure & services.
  • Experience with Linux & Kubernetes.
  • Own & lead multiple domains of the platform (microservices, REST APIs) from inception to deployment & maintenance while making best in class technical decisions that impact the success of the company.
  • Good knowledge of relational databases(Aurora/MySQL, DynamoDb etc) , Sharding, SQLqueries optimizations & ORM technologies.
  • Strong experience in Cloud Solutions AWS, RDS, Kubernetes/EKS, CI/CD pipelines, Testing & Automation mindset 
  • Clear written & spoken communication skills.
  • Self drive - you take complete ownership of your tasks & champion efforts to get your tasks to completion.
  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

Desired:

  • On-call experience debugging mission-critical systems.
  • Good understanding of AWS infrastructure or other public cloud providers
  • Experience managing Devops infrastructure.
  • Good debugging skills on production systems.

Location

  1. This role will be remote but is not eligible to be hired in San Francisco, CA, Oakland, CA, San Jose, CA, or the surrounding areas.

Travel 

We may have opportunities to build relationships with our Commerce Platform & external product teams & you may be required to travel occasionally to participate in project or team in-person meetings.

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:

  • Based in Colorado: $135,920 - $169,900 
  • This role may be eligible to participate in Twilios equity plan & corporate bonus plan. All roles are eligible for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.

The successful candidates starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, & geographic location within the state.
