The opportunity 

The Product Development & Engineering job family is the core of Magic Leaps revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering & technical operations, performing cutting-edge & complex scientific research & development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, & marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, & implementation activities to improve Magic Leaps AR products & services;  designing, constructing, testing, & operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, & performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, & specifications; & collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product & features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting & exceeding our customers needs & our business objectives.

As a Metrology Engineer on Magic Leap's Hardware Engineering team, will work with the Advanced Nanofab & Materials Research & Development group to produce innovative products with market leading quality & optical performance. This position is based in Austin, TX.

What you'll do
  • Perform SEM analysis to determine nano-feature geometry & conduct statistical analysis to draw conclusions on critical dimensions, duty cycle, side wall angle, & nano-scale defects.
  • Utilize EDX & uXRF techniques to understand material compositions & develop/update training for SEM, EDX, & uXRF.
  • Enhance SEM methodologies to facilitate rapid material & process iteration & oversee tool maintenance via vendor service contracts.
  • Collaborate with process engineers to identify & address defect modes, generating detailed reports on metrology findings for internal & external audiences.
  • Demonstrate strong judgment in critical observation, problem-solving, & proactive decision-making within a fast-paced environment.
  • Work in a clean-room laboratory environment as needed & conduct AFM measurements on wafers & grating structures.
  • Perform optical defect inspection on wafers post-lithographic processes.
The experience you'll bring
  • 5 years experience in metrology or optical engineering.
  • B.S. in materials science or engineering, chemistry, applied physics or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in SEM.
  • Proficiency in EDX, uXRF & AFM a plus.
  • Ability to work well under pressure & aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively work as a member of a team. 
  • Must be articulate & capable of producing reports & presentations that concisely address the matters assigned.
  • Working knowledge of any of the following is a plus: Matlab, Python, JMP, Gwyddion.
