WHAT YOULL DO
Eater is looking for an experienced reporter & editor with a strong understanding of the food & restaurant culture in D.C. to contribute news stories, features, video, & maps to our DC city site, one of its marquee publications. This person will work under D.C. editor Tierney Plumb. As associate editor, you will:
- Contribute to the day-to-day coverage of the site, including its mix of news stories, service-focused maps & guides, & in-depth or short features & profiles.
- Assist with occasional editing of freelancer work as needed
- Help the D.C. editor meet the sites editorial calendar requirements & goals
- Assist with scheduling/strategizing for social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) & newsletters for Eater DC, keeping in line with Eater's standards
- Participate in cross-brand efforts & collaboration with the national Eater.com team as needed
- Ensure all copy produced meets our style guide, SEO goals, & editorial standards
- Track openings & develop sources including chefs, restaurateurs, relevant spokespeople, & alternative sources for coverage as needed
- Attend nighttime restaurant previews, tastings, & events & shoot dish/scene photos, capture video footage
- Assist with running the daily operations of Eater DC when the lead editor is unavailable or on vacation
WHO YOU ARE
A journalism background, particularly with breaking daily news, developing sources, & covering a beat. Experience covering restaurants, hospitality, or real estate a plus.
- Ideas for & the ability to execute ambitious storytelling
- Ability to juggle daily news coverage with ongoing enterprise stories while adhering to deadlines
- Comfort with cold calling, quick deadlines, & a sense of urgency surrounding the fast pace of digital news
- A drive to continue Eaters reputation as the number one source furthering the conversations about the restaurant world in your city
- A drive to predict vs. react to the news cycle
- Attention to detail, news judgment, & careful eye for accuracy
- A desire & interest in covering communities & cultivating diverse sources. Fluency in languages other than English is a strong asset.
- Interest in digital headline writing, analytics, & social media publishing
- A love for restaurants & knowledge of the local scene & at the very least a voracious hunger to become an expert in the industry
- Experience with photography, shooting/editing video, analytics, Instagram, TikTok a plus
