Job Description

To enable Guardant Health to lead the disruption of cancer treatments through non-invasive cancer screening, the Technology Development Team is seeking a highly motivated development Scientist to help conceptualize, develop, & validate novel technologies for rare variant studies with next-generation sequencing. At Guardant, we leverage the most advanced technologies & work with leaders in many different fields to create the most impactful & meaningful technologies for cancer management.
As a Staff Scientist in the Technology Development Team, you will be a technical leader within the R&D team. You will interface with multiple functions at all organization levels including product management, process engineering, clinical operations, research operations, & bioinformatics. You will be a champion for new technology development, formulating & presenting ideas & demonstrating their feasibility to senior management. You will mentor junior scientists in the lab in order to design, validate, & implement new applications of liquid biopsy sequencing assays for the early detection, treatment, & monitoring of cancer. Within 1-2 yrs, you will be positioned to form & manage a small R&D team focused on product development.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Think creatively & apply knowledge to design experiments & analyze data for NGS applications in oncology diagnostics

Mentor & manage junior scientists' activities in the wet & dry lab, encouraging rigor of thought & performance

Maintain & expand expertise of the liquid biopsy & sequencing technological landscape

Thrive in both a team environment & independently to develop, test, & improve rare variant detection workflows from circulating cell free nucleic acids with next-generation sequencing

Be highly committed & deliver results in a fast-paced environment while maintaining ISO 13485 quality management system procedures

Transfer new technologies into production environments, write supporting documentation.

Support troubleshooting activities within the clinical lab with support for ongoing technologies after they are transferred


8-12 years of experience in genomics or molecular biology field

Preference for immediate role as a senior individual contributor, with ambitions to quickly move to managing an R&D team

Comprehensive technical knowledge of cell free nucleic acid sample isolation, preparation, & NGS sequencing technologies

Strong background in biochemistry, molecular biology, & working knowledge of genomics

Experience in rigorous product development practices, from concept to commercialization.

Experience with bioinformatics analysis of NGS data

Experience with liquid handling platforms is a plus

Excellent interdisciplinary communication skills required

Good organization skills, & detailed orientated

Self-driven & strong team player with proven track record

Additional Information

Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies up to 20 lbs & use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, & biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
