The Opportunity 

The Product Development & Engineering roles are core of Magic Leaps revolutionary AR capabilities.  These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering & technical operations, performing cutting-edge & complex scientific research & development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, & marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, & implementation activities to improve Magic Leaps AR products & services;  designing, constructing, testing, & operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, & performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, & specifications; & collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product & features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting & exceeding our customers needs & our business objectives.

As a Staff, Optical Engineer - Polarization & Test, you will formulate processes that facilitate the testing & optimization of optical components & systems that enable the projection of virtual images in augmented reality (AR) devices. Apply advanced knowledge of optical systems & test methods to design & develop new innovative optical system components. Drive a collaborative environment that fosters engineering excellence, creativity, & innovation in the interdisciplinary areas of optical design & testing, display technologies, & image processing.

This position is based at our site in Austin, TX.

What You'll Do 

  • Develop concepts & detailed designs for virtual display & see through components.
  • Perform characterization & analysis of virtual display components, polarization components, Liquid Crystal (LC) & Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) components or devices.
  • Specify component & system level performance metrics to achieve product goals.
  • Prototype measurement & qualification against written performance criteria.
  • Coordinates & accomplishes activities involved in design, fabrication, operation, application, testing, & production.

The experience you bring

  • 7+ years experience in designing, modeling & testing of projection or display systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of polarization metrology methods & instrumentation. 
  • Experience developing novel instruments and/or methods for both objective assessment of polarization optics & system.
  • Strong knowledge of LC devices, manufacturing, & characterization methods.
  • Working knowledge of optical metrology methods & instrumentation for diffractive component qualification.
  • Experience in the establishment & documentation of test requirements of optical systems & components.
  • Experience in one or more scientific computer languages (e.g. Matlab, C++/C#, Python).
  • Excellent creative/analytical & critical thinking & problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in working with international, cross-functional teams.
  • Good written & verbal communication skills.

Its exciting if you also have

  • Experience in the design & simulation of diffractive / nano-structured optical components.
  • Experience in standard display quality metrics.
