XO Group, Inc.
XO Group, Inc. is proud to announce Hack Upon a Cause: Powered by XO Group, Inc., a Hackathon with the goal of building sustainable technological solutions to better the lives of women around the world. Together we will be focused for 24 hours building web & mobile apps to help four amazing non profits solve a unique set of real world problems that women and teens encounter both locally and globally every day.
XO Group, Inc. is a global media and technology leader providing young women with the trusted information products and advice they need to guide them through the most transformative events of their lives. Collaborate with developers, designers, entrepreneurs and non-profits to impact the lives of women that need it the most. The participating non-profits include: Step Up Womens Network, Wish Upon A Wedding, New Course, and DayOne.
Step Up Women's Network
SUWN empowers teen girls from under-resourced communities to be confident, college-bound, and career-ready, and
propel professional women through connections, collaborations, and continuous development.
Address the lack of a 'safe' forum for mentors/mentees to interact after mentoring events. We see this app as an alternative to texting and emails similar to iMentor and Blackboard, but on a mobile platform--something without direct messaging capacity. SUWN would have administrative control where we could monitor all content and control who has access to which parts of the conversation. This could also be used to add additional curricular content to the program by giving girls 'challenges' or posing discussion questions online.
Wish Upon A Wedding
Wish Upon a Wedding provides weddings and vow renewals to couples facing terminal illness and serious life altering circumstances, regardless of sexual orientation. Our organization was created to celebrate the courage, determination and spirit of these couples by granting their deam wedding wishes. A design hack where you will enter into the XO Hacakthondesign contest through 99Designs for free, bring the .PSD's to the event and have devs build their site on your design!
New Course is a small non profit based in Seattle, Washington. We enhance conservation and development outcomes by making sure the links between women, the environment, and poverty are understood and multi-purpose solutions are developed and applied.
APP IDEAS: #1 - Asking women what they need Create an app that allows women to feed in a survey and voice their opinion to let us know globally, regionally or nationally what their needs are. The app should help us have a better understanding of what women everwhere visions are, fears and the opportunities that they want. #2 - Training, tools & knowledge Development of an app for environmental practitioners, donors and even travelers. #3 - Prioritizing areas for intervention. Figure out how to mesh data sets like; environmental patterns, poverty numbers and women head of house holds in vulnerable communities and project things like human trafficking or other human rights abuses could be outstanding. #4 - Awareness Raising
Day One partners with New York City youth to end dating abuse and domestic violence through community education, supportive services, legal advocacy and leadership development.
APP IDEAS: #1 - Relate: An application that allows users to track the progress of their relationship using daily quizzes. Questions for the quizzes are populated based on the users' identified interests and preferences for themselves and a partner during an initial quiz at sign-up.
#2 - Search Me: A data-mining tool that searches public records and indexed websites for any instance of information that is perosnal information. #3 - Message Share: An app that allows a user to easily select and copy time-stamped SMS, MMS or emails and retain them or share them with others, either via a screen capture or some form of social sharing. The app can be used to preserve and/or share threatening messages with attorneys, law enforcement or whomever the user chooses.
#4 - Safety Plan: An application designed to walk a survivor of abuse through the 'safety planning' process, which is a system for survivors to conduct advance planning to identify safe routes or locations if they are at risk.
