About the Speakers
Matthew O. Brimer
Co-Founder, General Assembly,
Matthew Brimer is an entrepreneur, community builder, & general instigator of mischief. He is Co-Founder of General Assembly, where he supports GA's global efforts around social impact, alumni community engagement, & partnership development. He has worn many hats at GA, cultivating the organizations early community of startups & entrepreneurs, establishing critical global partnerships to expand the brand, & starting GAs enterprise corporate training business. Most recently, Brimer launched GA's philanthropic arm, Opportunity Fund, so that anyone willing to work hard & follow their passions can have a meaningful career pursuing work they love.
Brimer is also Co-Founder of Daybreaker, a global community & lifestyle brand producing conscious morning experiences around the world. Prior to all these shenanigans, Brimer consulted on digital education strategy for Yale, freelanced in web design, worked for Apple as a campus rep, & served frozen custard. In college he founded two startups, one building team-based games powered by rivalries (PickTeams), & another curating & selling antique furniture (Aloysius Properties), both of which proved to be more educational than profitable. Brimer holds a BA in Sociology from Yale, loves a proper dance party, & lives with his beautiful girlfriend Whitney in Brooklyn.
Jonathan Swerdlin is a serial entrepreneur & venture capitalist. He is most recently Co-Founder of Portal - a social platform launching soon that brings together peer-to-peer payments & video sharing. Prior to this, Swerdlin was Chairman of fast-growing underwear company Thinx, helping grow it from inception to over $40M in sales. He also founded & exited from his first e-commerce company in 2010.
Swerdlin is currently General Partner of Wisdom VC - a stage-agnostic venture capital firm focused on developing a more human model of venture capital. Wisdom VC's goal is to deliver outsized returns by investing with intelligence & heart in grounded visionaries solving real problems in interesting domains. He has made ten investments over the last twelve months. Swerdlin loves dogs, bicycles, dance parties, & living in Brooklyn.
