WebVR, a new JavaScript API that uses existing web technologies to create interactive VR experiences that work across ALL devices, is being integrated into Google Chrome as we speak & is poised to take off next year. Now's the time to start experimenting with the future of VR development.

Brian Chirls, CTO of Datavized Technologies & creator of the WebVR Starter Kit, will present an introduction to how anyone can build VR experiences using a web browser. Brian will be joined by Debra Anderson, Datavized Technologies Chief Strategy Officer: This primer workshop will feature an overview of A-Frame, rapid prototyping VR in the browser, & other tools & resources as well as live tutorials, demonstrations & prototype applications.

Participants will gain an understanding of the fundamentals, motivations, & technical components to building the Immersive Web. The class explains the building blocks of the Virtual Reality web providing support for virtual-reality devices to web apps, enabling developers to create virtual-reality experiences that run on any WebGL-enabled browser. By visiting a website, you can experience interactive 360 & VR environments on mobile, desktop or VR headsets including Oculus Rfit, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, or Google Cardboard.

In this workshop you will learn:

Rapid prototyping VR in the browser, & other tools & resources as well as live tutorials, demonstrations & prototype applications
Proprietary platform environments vs. WebVR
The fundamentals, motivations, & technical components to building the Immersive Web

Brian Chirls, Chief Technology Officer

Brian Chirls Co-founder & Chief Technology Officer at Datavized Technologies & recognized innovator in the independent film world. He was recently the Digital Technology Fellow at POV, a position funded by the Knight Foundation. He has developed innovative models for interaction, data visualization & content authoring in virtual reality. In 2014 he created the WebVR Starter Kit, enabling anyone with an internet browser to create VR in one line of code. Brian has helped to create a new genre of interactive video pieces & software libraries that demonstrate ways to combine the interactivity & connectivity of the web with the aesthetic power of cinema & his work has been presented at CPH:DOX, IDFA DocLab, SXSW & Tribeca Film Institute.

Debra Anderson, Chief Strategy Officer

Debra Anderson is Co-founder & Chief Strategy Officer at Datavized Technologies. She is a dynamic entrepreneur, strategist & producer specialized in data-driven & researched based approaches to immersive experiences. Debra founded the innovation consultancy Culture Shock in 2007, developed pioneering real-time data visualization applications, presented groundbreaking interactive works with NFB at Sundance New Frontier, Tribeca Storyscapes, & curated arts/tech projects at Volta Art Fair NY & Switzerland. Debra designs & instructs the Big Data: Consumer Research at The New School For Public Engagement, WebVR at Parsons School of Art, Media, & Technology & guest lectures at MIT, NYU, & ICP.
