How to Make Distance Work: Applications For UX Projects

Working together across geographic distance is much more challenging than working together when collocated. In this talk, we bring three decades of research to bear on understanding why this is the case. Our results are applicable to the special challenges when you are part of a distributed UX project. We will review the factors that make distance UX work challenging, like having the UX researchers & designers far from the developers. For each of these factors there's a remedy. For example, there are ways to build common ground & trust, important for the smooth communication between team members with disparate backgrounds & skills. In addition, there are several online tools, one of which we developed, that can diagnose the specific challenges for a team trying to work across distance, helping them focus on remedying their unique problems. We end with a set of practical tips on how to make your distance work work better.

SPEAKERS

Gary M. Olson & Judith S. Olson are Professors Emeritus at the University of California, Irvine, Department of Informatics. For 30 years now, they have been uncovering the specific challenges of working together when geographically distributed. Their paper, Distance Matters, published in 2000, is their best known. Since then, they have written an edited book on Scientific Collaboration on the Internet (MIT Press, 2008) & a monograph on Working Together Apart (Morgan & Claypool, 2015) developing these ideas further. They have won a number of awards: Both Olsons are members of the CHI Academy & they jointly received the CHI Lifetime Achievement Award. Judith was awarded the ACM-W Athena Lecture (effectively woman of the year in computer science), & Gary received the CHI Lifetime Service Award.
