The School of International & Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University is hosting its annual Global Digital Futures Policy Forum on May 5. The forum will examine the consequences of pressures towards internet fragmentation for cyber issues, with an opening keynote by Eric Schmidt!

The 2017 Global Digital Futures Policy Forum

What had been a single global internet is under pressure towards fragmentation, for a variety of technological, geopolitical & policy reasons, at a time when globalization itself seems to be under strain.

Few human achievements are as global in their nature & ambition as the internet. Yet this global resource is being challenged by a geopolitical & technological context bringing borders - physical & digital - back to the forefront. As more people come online, with economic & geopolitical forces supporting globalization, the rise of connectivity has also increased political instability & created new security threats that States are scrambling to address.

Columbia SIPA's Digital Futures Policy Forum is envisioned as a long-term intellectual initiative to reimagine our digital future, focus on the potential benefits & costs arising from global digital technology changes. The purpose of this conference is not only to identify immediate challenges but also to look ahead to emerging challenges & possible policy responses.

Across six panels focusing on industrial vs commercial uses of the internet, digital trade, trust & assurance, global platforms & international development, conflict & democracy & financial systemic risks, this year's Global Digital Futures Policy Forum will focus on this tension between fragmentation of the internet & globalization.
