NYU Emerging Markets Conference
NYU Stern's Emerging Markets Association & Stern in Africa are excited to host NYU's inaugural Emerging Markets Conference.

The goal of the event is to create a forum where industry leaders can engage with students in a forward-looking industry discussion. Speakers will share thoughts on the current economic trends, the role of Africa & Asia going forward, the implications of changes in global trade, & the development of emerging markets in general. The economic keynote presentation will be complemented by a series of panels, including impact investing, infrastructure financing, & a geopolitical debate.

JAHANGIR AZIZ
Global Head Emerging Market Economics, J.P. Morgan

Jahangir Aziz heads J.P. Morgan's global emerging markets economics team. He led Asia emerging market economics over 2013-16 after having joined the firm in late 2008 as the India chief economist. Prior to that, he served as Principal Economic Advisor to India's Minster of Finance having spent 12 years at the IMF where he headed the China division from 2004-07. Jahangir holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota.

RON MARGALIT
Principal Investor & Adviser at the Intersection of Innovation, Blended Capital & Emerging Markets

With over 15 years of experience, Ron is a veteran principal investor, entrepreneur & advisor working at the intersection of innovation, blended capital, & impact. Ron was selected as a Rising Star Investor at the SuperReturn Series & was awarded permanent residency by the US State Department for his extraordinary abilities in the field of impact investing.

Previously, Ron served as the first appointed economic representative to the Board of the World Bank Group by the Government of Israel, worked as an advisor on innovative financing to global 500 companies & a mentor to Israeli-Palestinian startups.

Ron received executive education at Harvard Business School, earned his MBA from Georgetown University & a bachelor's degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

CHRISTIAN RUEHMER
Head of Risk & Compliance, Bamboo Capital Partners

Christian Ruehmer is the Head of Risk & Compliance at Bamboo Capital Partners, a leading impact fund investing in major emerging markets. Christian has close to 30 years of experience in international banking & has also worked as an expert for Risk Management & Efficiency Management in Micro- & SME Finance.

In 2004 Christian founded Proyecto Horizonte, a community development program in Bolivia, which serves over 1500 children & their families with programs in education, health care & community services.

He graduated from Hochschule fr Bankwirtschaft in Frankfurt, Germany with a Diploma in Banking & Finance is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) & a Financial Risk Manager (FRM).

JAY LURIE
Investment Officer, Infrastructure Latin America, IFC

Jay Lurie is an Investment Officer in the Latin America & the Caribbean Infrastructure & Natural Resources investment team at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group's private sector financing arm. Jay joined IFC in 2009 & has worked across the infrastructure project life cycle in project development, equity investing, project finance lending, & PPP transaction advisory to government ministries. His sector focus is energy, water/waste, transport & logistics where he has led investments in Latin America, Asia & Europe. Prior to IFC in Washington, Jay was based in Singapore & India for IFC, in India & NY for Macquarie Capital, & NY for Credit Suisse. Jay holds a Master of Arts in Economics & International Development from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan & is a CFA charterholder.

ERIC WITTLEDER
Vice President, Brookfield

Eric Wittleder is a Vice President within Brookfield's infrastructure debt group with responsibility for origination, execution & asset management for transactions across the Americas. Eric joined Brookfield in 2017 from Societe Generale where he had been Vice President, Energy & Project Finance Group, advising on & raising debt capital for energy & infrastructure projects in the US & Latin America. Eric previously held positions at SMBC, Banco Espirito Santo, & WestLB. While at SMBC, Eric was seconded for 2 years to Financiera de Desarrollo Nacional in Bogota, Colombia to build out its project finance unit & support the country's infrastructure program. Eric holds a Bachelor of Science (Foreign Service) from Georgetown University.

AMAKA ANKU
Practice Head of Africa, Eurasia Group

Amaka leads the firm's Africa practice, directing its analysis of regional trends & the interaction of politics, policy, & markets. Her own work focuses on political & economic trends in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, & Senegal.

Amaka has on-the-ground experience working across the African continent with organizations such as Africare, the African Development Bank, the International Crisis Group, & the International Rescue Committee. From 2011 to 2015, she practiced law in the international arbitration & litigation group of global law firm Shearman & Sterling, LLP, where she represented multinational corporations in multimillion-dollar, cross-border disputes throughout the region. Amaka is a regular commentator & speaker on Nigerian & African affairs. She grew up in Enugu, Nigeria, & is fluent in Igbo & French. Amaka holds a bachelor's degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs at Princeton University & a doctor of law degree from Harvard Law School.

CHARLES EBERLY
Global Head of Coverage for Clean Power, CrossBoundary

Charles Eberly serves as the Global Head of Coverage for CrossBoundary's Clean Power practice. He leads of team based across Southern Africa, the Middle East, & South Asia. CrossBoundary Clean Power takes a transaction-centered approach to facilitate nascent stage energy markets in their development & transformation. Charles advises governments & IPPs with a primary focus on national priority projects involving complex deal structuring.

Prior to CrossBoundary, Charles worked for Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the M&A team of an international firm investing in air, maritime, & land logistics assets across Africa, & Northern Trust's Asia Pacific alternative investments practice based in Hong Kong.

He is a decorated United States Marine Corps infantry officer & veteran of the War in Afghanistan. Charles holds a Masters of International Affairs from Columbia University & an MBA from Columbia Business School. He was a Patrick Henry Honors Scholar at Hampden Sydney College, where he studied economics.

MICHELLE DIGRUTTOLO
Senior Marketing Director, Ankura Consulting Group

Michelle DiGruttolo is a Senior Managing Director in charge of Ankura Consulting Group's Geopolitical Intelligence practice area. In this role, she leverages more than 20 years of experience in the US intelligence community, including experience as the executive coordinator of the President's Daily Intelligence Brief where she was responsible for delivering daily intelligence briefings directly to President Barack Obama & his team. Prior to working at Ankura, she received her MBA from UVA's Darden School of Business & worked as a business development executive & strategic planner for Lockheed Martin.

RAJ PATEL
Project Consultant, Chatham House

Raj Patel is currently a PhD Candidate in Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. As a consultant associated with the Africa Programme at Chatham House, he helped author a report focused on social norms & corruption in Nigeria. His research focuses on the intersection of philosophy, politics, & economics, as well as the political economy of corruption. His work experience includes stints at the US Department of Homeland Security & the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Washington, DC, where he focused on issues related to privacy & security.
