Co-presented by ZYZZYVA & Goethe-Institut San Francisco

Tech & the literary world converge as ZYZZYVA Editor-in-Chief Oscar Villalon moderates a panel of Silicon Valley technologists & authors on how AI will change our writing process. Would literature & writers be automated, or will AI mainly be an assistive tool? What issues are present in both the training & use of AI in writing? With Raiya Kind (Google), Jessica Powell (Audioshake), author Ryan Sloan, & James Yu (Sudowrite). FREE, $10-15 suggested donation

Raiya Kind works at the intersection of language, consciousness, & AI. Weaving cognitive linguistics & cultural theory into Natural Language Understanding & Machine Learning, her research & career have spanned the University of Oxford, Google, IV.AI, rather insightful side quests into hedge funds & deep tech, as well as personal entrepreneurial escapades. Her current work in Intentional AI & AI narrative considers how this technological paradigm shift threads into the tapestry of humanity.

Jessica Powell is the author of The Big Disruption: A Totally Fictional but Essentially True Silicon Valley Story, & is the former Vice President of Communications for Google. Her short stories have been published in The New York Times, VICE, Alaska Quarterly Review, Chicago Quarterly Review, & elsewhere. She is also the co-founder & CEO of Audioshake, an AI startup that builds sound separation software to make audio more accessible & interactive.

Ryan Sloan is a novelist & essayist. He teaches writing at the University of California, Berkeley. A graduate of New York University's fiction MFA program, his work is published or forthcoming in LA Weekly, Joyland Magazine, Opium Magazine, The Modern Spectator & Painted Bride Quarterly, among other publications. Residencies include the 2021 Bread Loaf Environmental Writers' Conference, the 2021 Tin House Winter Workshop, the 2019 Lit Camp Writers' Conference & the 2019 Arctic Circle Residency on the Summer Solstice Expedition. He lives in Oakland.

James Yu spends his time writing speculative fiction, advising & investing in startups, & exploring the intersection of technology & society. He led the team that built the first Facebook branded VR app, & was one of the first engineers at Scribd. He is co-founder of the AI writing partner Sudowrite, & is a proud member of SFWA, Codex, & Sudowriters. He lives in San Francisco.

Oscar Villalon (moderator) is the editor of ZYZZYVA, a recipient of the Whiting Literary Magazine Prize in 2022. His writing has been published in Stranger's Guide, Freeman's, The Believer, Literary Hub, & other publications. He lives with his family in San Francisco.
