EVENT DETAILS
Columbia DSL is excited to announce a new monthly prototyping series entitled Test/Break. Each month we'll focus on a number of projects that are in various states of development. Test/Break will provide a forum for creatives exploring new forms & functions of storytelling. Focus is placed on projects that are pushing at the edges of narrative possibilities with emerging technology (AI, AR, VR, IoT...) as well as web pervasive technologies. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are working to adapt or create virtual work & have interest in experimenting with various types of collaboration & participatory methods of interaction. Each prototyping session is followed by an open conversation between storytellers & participants that pulls back the curtain on creative practice.

Test/Break returns Thursday, October 29th at 2:30pm Eastern time! Artists will be announced later this week.

Excited to be featuring new work from Ellen Pearlman & Adipat Virdi at the next edition of Test/Break on Thursday, October 29th at 2:30pm Eastern.

Ellen will be prototyping elements of "Language is Leaving Me - An Opera Of the Skin"

"Language is Leaving Me - An Opera Of the Skin" is a very early phase project that investigates epigenetic, or inherited traumatic memory through short vignettes. Using archival sources, AI, biometrics & memory it seeks to explore how our ancestral rDNA influences our contemporary lives.

Ellen Pearlman is a New York based new media artist, writer, critic, curator & educator. In February 2020 she premiered "AIBO", an emotionally intelligent artificial intelligent brainwave opera at the Estonian Academy of Music as part of her Vertigo STARTS Laureate grant, with another presentation at Vertigo STARTS Days in Paris. A Fulbright World Learning Specialist in Art, Media & New Technology, as well as a Zero1 American Arts Incubator/U.S. State Department grantee, Ellen is Director of ThoughtWorks Arts, a global research innovation lab, & also an Assistant Professor, Senior Researcher at RISEBA University in Riga, Latvia.

Adipat will be prototyping elements of Killing Honour

Killing Honour is a multiplatform, immersive storyworld geared towards using storytelling as a tool for real world social change. In this case, it is to eradicate forced marriages & honour crimes. The core of the project is an immersive theatre experience that revolves around a brother who murders his sister in the name of honour.

The narrative is designed to: build an understanding of & shine a spotlight into a culture that allows these crimes to happen through audience complicity; use organic exploration of story fragments to piece together the strong emotional bonds between the brother & sister; showcase the different social, religious & cultural viewpoints around this situation by gamifying advocacy.

In short, how can you use your audience as an empathy engine that enables narrative to create meaning & difference in the real world?

Adipat Virdi studied Architecture & practiced Socio-Spatial Analysis before changing career to focus on creative strategy & experience design. Having studied at both Oxford & Cambridge, Adipat has qualifications that include an MBA & MAs in Design Strategy & Innovation, Advanced Architectural Studies & Screenwriting. Key areas of expertise are in audience engagement strategy, organisational behaviour mechanics, strategic narrative thinking & experience design & measurement to provide innovative & effective solutions to complex problems.
