Guest speaker Shixiang Shane Gu is a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. His research spans deep learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, probabilistic machine learning, & robotics. Prior to joining Google DeepMind, Shane was a researcher on the ChatGPT team at OpenAI & a Visiting Associate Professor (Adjunct Professor) at the University of Tokyo. Shane holds PhD from the University of Cambridge & the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, & B.ASc. in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto. Shane previously was also a visiting scholar at the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University. Shane's academic work received Best Paper Award at CoRL 2019, Google Focused Research Award, Cambridge-Tbingen PhD Fellowship, & NSERC Scholarship, & was featured in Google Research Blogpost & MIT Technology Review. Shane is a Japan-born Chinese Canadian, & he speaks, reads, & writes in three languages.

Our flagship autumn Seminar Series on International Technology Management in 2023 will examine ways in which new digital technologies, business models, & data governance frameworks are addressing problems & opportunities at the interface between the digital economy & the external world, with special attention to new patterns of competition & cooperation between Asia & the U.S
The series begins September 2023 & continues weekly until December 2023. Seminars will be held in-person & over Zoom on Tuesdays, 4:30 PM - 5:50 PM.
Our seminars are being offered in a hybrid format & are open to the public in-person.
