David Helvarg (Host) is Executive Director of Blue Frontier - an ocean conservation & policy group & the author of six books: Blue Frontier, The War Against the Greens, 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, Rescue Warriors, Saved by the Sea & The Golden Shore. He is organizer of Blue Vision' Summits for ocean activists, Peter Benchley Ocean Awards (with Wendy Benchley), chaired the first global March for the Ocean in 2018 & in 2019 launched the Ocean Climate Action Plan coalition that contributed to the first Climate Action law in U.S. history including $6 billion for coastal restoration & greening ports.
Helvarg worked as a war correspondent in Northern Ireland & Central America, covered a range of issues from military science to the AIDS epidemic, & reported from every continent including Antarctica. An award-winning journalist, he produced more than 40 broadcast documentaries for PBS, The Discovery Channel, & others. His print work continues to appear in The New York Times, LA Times, National Geographic, Sierra, etc. He's done radio work for Marketplace, AP radio, & Pacifica & led workshops for journalists in Poland, Turkey, Tunisia, Slovakia & Washington DC. Today he & Blue Frontier continue to lead media training workshops for ocean scientists & advocates. He is also a licensed Private Investigator, body-surfer & scuba diver.
Louie Psihoyos (Guest) is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker & Executive Director of the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). He is recognized as one of the top still photographers in the world, having created iconic images for National Geographic for 18 years, & hundreds of covers for other magazines. Believing that film can be the most powerful weapon in the world, Louie founded OPS with Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jim Clark in 2005.
An ardent diver & dive photographer, Psihoyos' mission is to show the world the decline of the oceans-our planet's most crucial resource. Circling the globe dozens of times on photographic missions, he collects the imagery & stories underlying the compelling issues that challenge & threaten the natural world while connecting with environmentalists who are working to save the planet.
