Custom Keyboards - The Promises & Perils
Custom keyboards never really lived up to their initial hype, did they? We'll dive into why this is - from the unique challenges of debugging an extension to the yawning moat that is today's standard of autocorrect - & we'll ultimately ask the question: Is an app like Bitmoji really the limit of custom keyboards - a tool which can change the way users interact with every app on their phone?
My name is Brian V. O'Toole, & I've been coding for about 2 years now...almost exclusively on an app called TimeStamp Keyboard (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/timestamp-keyboard/id1363760897). I wanted to make a tool to help me in my main profession - as a TV producer. My most recent credit is Executive Producer / Showrunner / Camera for "The Laws of Jaws" on Shark Week 2019. Some more about my work in television is here: (https://www.cambriancreative.com/samplesandgallery), & I'm @brianvotoole on both Twitter & Instagram.
