Learn research & writing processes crucial to story development for a documentary film, from pre-production to the edit, with a focus on loglines & synopses.

Note: This is a 2 part class (6 hours)

It's common knowledge that much of the writing for documentary films tends to happen in the edit, but that's far too late to be realizing who your main characters are & what your story's really about. That's why writing & story development are also essential skills for pre-production & production on any documentary. In this class, you'll learn about the research & writing processes that are crucial to story development for a documentary film, from pre-production to the edit, with a focus on the art of writing loglines & synopses as a means to communicate & develop a story. You'll also learn the research process to prepare for each shoot day & make sure you're getting everything you need.

The series will be taught by Emmy-award winning director & editor Malika Zouhali-Worrall, whose previous directing credits include CALL ME KUCHU (Berlin Film Festival 2012) & THANK YOU FOR PLAYING (Tribeca Film Festival 2015).

You'll need to come to this class with at least one documentary concept (which can be in pre-production, production or early post production), including a logline & a one-paragraph summary for each.

Space is limited to ten workshop participants.

What You Will Learn
You'll come away with a refined logline & short summary for your project

How to break down what your film is about using clear storytelling terms

How to communicate your story & filmmaking style in a way that is accessible to funders
